Kick it like… 11 Bass Drums for eurorack

Here it is: The big bass drum module comparison – this one goes to eleven. In just under 20 minutes we play 11 bass drum modules, all with the same sequence, no frills. This is just about listening to all modules in the same setup to be able to compare them. Just what people do when they come to SchneidersLaden showroom to compare modules.

Deciding on a new module is often a lengthy process of weighing pros and cons, gathering opinions, and watching videos. There are product descriptions and feature lists, but ultimately it comes down to sound – does the sound of the module fit the aesthetic I want?

We put all the bass drum modules from our showroom into a rack – 102hp – to pit them against each other: Tiptop Audio – BD909 & BD808, Hexinverter – Mutant BD09 & Mutant Bassdrum, WMD – Crater, Noise Engineering – Basimilus Iteritas Alter, Erica Synths – Bass Drum, Jomox – ModBase 09 Mk II, 2hp – Kick, L.E.P. – Cassa, Befaco – Kickall.

They all have their own character, very different concepts and features. We are not interested in whether one module has three CV inputs more than another, but only in the basic sound – some of the presented modules are quite capable to function as a stand-alone synthesizer voice, but that’s not what we want to talk about here.

We hope the video can help you in your search for your next kick. At the beginning of the video there is a timeline to help you find your favorites.

What about… some modern classics?

Oldie but Goldie? There are certainly some modules that drifted out of focus, especially to new users of modular synthesizers. Today we will be retrospecting on modules that have been around for a long time and are still available. Looking back at the beginning of the eurorack format,  it was quite easy to keep track of new developments – there was Doepfer from Germany and there was Analogue Systems from the UK. Both are still around and offer most of the modules they produced until today. And now it is even possible to put AS modules into a Doepfer System (the now “standard” eurorack) without buying an extra adapter, because AS modules are now available with compatible bus connectors – the Dual-Bus.

Analogue Systems

There is the great sounding RS95e – a VCO that is always a good choice for thick vintage sound, an excellent choice for an oscillator with lots of character. Other often recommended modules by AS are: The Analogue Systems RS-510e which is based on the legendary EMS Trapezoid Generator and the excellent sounding RS-110 Multimode Filter – both great analog designs with a special twist! The RS-110 for example offers an open feedback-loop! The socket Res-Out and Res-In act like an insert i.e. they allow you to process the audio signal in the feedback loop by other audio processors like filters, distortions, delays, frequency shifters etc.

Doepfer

Doepfer also offers great filters, often very affordable compared to competitors and always real workhorses. For example the A-124 Wasp and A-106-5 SEM filter are not only two of the cheapest filters available, but also great sounding choices. They are based on vintage designs (obviously) and really do a lot of things right – these will most likely never leave your rack again, they are great sounding multimode-filters, cheap and small, while not being too fiddly. The Wasp is a great dirty and unstable design that gives your sound a lot of liveliness and power. The SEM is a smooth sounding and vibrant filter that works great (not only) for basslines.

WMD

And there are more manufacturers that have been around for a while – for example WMD. Ever heard of the micro-Hadron-Collider, Synchrodyne or Geiger Counter – great names and great modules! All by WMD. These three modules have been available for several years now and all offer something special. What sets the uHC – a dual state-variable-filter – apart from most other VCFs is the integrated voltage controlled mixer. It can be used to create different and new filter modes – Wide Notch, Dual Bandpass, etc. It is also great for blending separate sounds together using both filters split and it allows cool frequency modulation of the mixed signals. The Synchrodyne is very interesting due to a combination of building blocks, which no other manufacturer packed together into one module. It contains most parts of a traditional synth-voice, but it goes a much different way. There is an analog sawtooth wave oscillator with a waveshaper, a “switched capacitor” filter and a PLL circuit which drives the cutoff frequency of the filter. HERE is a video of one (of many) possible uses of the Syncrodyne, this is so unusual that I had to add it. The WMD Geiger Counter is… another thing of its own…I wanted to say, but then there are about 5(?) different incarnations of this bit-crusher design! Only one of them is a eurorack module though. What they all share is a modern high gain preamp that drives an 8 bit computer, creating sounds which range from nice to unbelievably alien. Give. It. A. Try.

Lots of normalizations and patch-points are typical for WMD modules, resulting in very complex, powerful and – in the end – rewarding designs. There are of cause more manufacturers and modules that deserve to be in this post, but let’s keep some for next time.

This is by no means a complete overview of the available modules or a full review of the modules discussed. The What about… texts are here to give you new ideas and maybe another perspective on things. All these modules offer more features than we have talked about in this post. For further information please click the provided links or – even better – visit the shop and ask the SchneidersLaden experts in the showroom.

WMD

WMD

At the Superbooth 2018, WMD presents a new trigger sequencer and various digital drum modules.

WMD_3

The prototype of the Advanced Trigger Sequencer features 16 Tracks and memory for saving sequences. Arrange parts and songs, and save it all to memory! The module looks very promising and very hands-on.

WMD_2

WMD has integrated a large number of micro-samples, i.e. ultra-short samples, into their percussion synthesizer Fracture. It was supposed to become a module that can only reproduce clap sounds, but in the end the sound repertoire was much larger than expected. According to the manufacturer, various sample templates such as claps, table tennis balls or the sound of an opening beer bottle are used. WMD Fracture then plays excerpts of these samples simultaneously and the different percussion sounds are created.

Another drum module is the Chimera which was developed to emulate the sound of a tambourine and shakers.

WMD also presented a few other modules like the Octavus and a new digital VCA.

Tyler Thompson for WMD @SUPERBOOTH17

WMD did a very nice Gesprächskonzert with their wide range of products at SUPERBOOTH17. Tyler Thompson from WMD is performing a hardware techno session on a modular synthesizer with the new Arpitecht and Chimera modules by WMD. A perfect example of how to use a Gesprächskonzert for the presentation of products in their natural habitat. In this way, the audience can imagine how the products can be effectively used and what they can achieve.

NAMM 2018 – WMD

The WMD guys showed a new drum module called Fracture at the NAMM show 2018. First and foremost, it is meant to produce clap sounds. However, thanks to its multi particle synthesis, it can do much more. Fracture generates sound based on granulated recordings. – The final sample selection has yet to be made. Unlike the Chimera, which uses rather long audio snippets, single impulses are used in the new module. By grouping them, clap-like sounds can be achieved. Basic sound design is done by three potentiometers. One knob determines how many people are clapping. The second control element sets the time the people are clapping. The third knob defines the people’s skills. – Are they concentrated or completely drunk? Additionally, there are a frequency potentiometer and two switches to choose a punch and tail mode. A reverb processor with two algorithms gives sounds the final touch.

Fracture was built to be misused. For instance, it is possible to play individual impulses in random order. The result: Sequences composed of unique hits. Most parameters are voltage controllable, including the reverb. Therefore, it is possible to add the effect selectively to single steps of a pattern. – Sounds really cool!

Superbooth17 – WMD

WMD Bild 1

The American hardware manufacturer WMD shows its latest modules at Superbooth17, all of which will be available at SchneidersLaden within the next days / weeks. First in line is the Arpitecht, a quantizer and rhythmic arpeggiator, as well as the chord generator Arpitecht Triad. Shortly thereafter, the DJ-style stereo filter Overseer will arrive at the shop. The freshly developed MSCL stereo compressor and the Modbox module are available already, by the way.

Additionally, visitors of the Superbooth17 can have a look at WMD’s Advanced Trigger Sequencer and a drum module, for now simply called the Tambourine. Both products are still in development, they will come out in spring 2018.

Namm 17 – WMD

wmd standwmda1wmd4WMD shows five new modules and a geiger counter pro pedal at NAMM 2017:

Arpitecht is a well equipped quantizer and arpeggiator, which allows the user to quickly select and edit scales, add slides, configure rhythms and a good deal more. Up to seven octaves (-1 to +5) can be employed to create intoxicating melodies. Thanks to a multitude of CV inputs it is possible to create continuously varying results in no time. For playing chords, WMD invented the Triad. This module generates three note values out of one incoming pitch signal. Users can not only choose the triad used, but also the inversion. Modulations of both parameters are possible as well.

The Overseer is a stereo VCF based on the designs of DJ filters. Compared to the circuits of well-known mixer manufacturers, WMD’s module sounds a lot more beefy while retaining the basic character. On top of that, the functional range was broadened to make the Overseer a flexible tool for sound design. Another stereo tool from WMD is the MSCL, a punchy compressor / limiter with editable ratio, threshold, attack, release and gain parameters as well as a side chain input.

Last but not least, WMD built a dual LFO module called Modbox with phase and skew options plus noise as well as sample & hold outputs.

wmd pedalThe new Geiger Counter Pro Pedal has now over 700 wavetables to bitcrush you into the elysium – this time with 12 instead of 8 bit -now you can morph now between the wavetables  and it comes with wet / dry poti / Midi  / 2x expression pedial inputs /Noise Gate / Lowpassfilter & 16 User presets.

It should be available around  april and cost ca 449$.

NAMM16: Eurorack mix

A lot of new things to see at NAMM in Anaheim this year.

qubit sequenzerQuBit Electronics show the already released OCTANE, a CV and gate sequencer module with integrated clock generator, quantizer and memory banks. Two modules can be cascaded to achieve longer sequences and to get more memory! Available again in few weeks for ~330USD

CHORD, a four voice polyphonic DCO i.e. an analog VCO with digital control. The oscillators’ frequencies can be synched, easily tuned to chords with inversions of course. It has mute and voltage controllable waveshape per VCO. Price will be between 500-600 USD and it will be available Qbit_ChordMixologyin April.

ANA (not pictured) is one VCO from the Chord, only 2HP wide but still a full VCO for only 150USD.

MIXOLOGY prototype is a voltage mixer module with 4 mono and two stereo channels. It features voltage control over level and panorama as well as mute and solo that can be activated with gates. Will be released mid-summer.

Speaking of powerful mixers, WMD has a prototype of the PERFORMANCE MIXER on display. Eight channels, voltage control of a number of parameters, a headphone out as well as a cue function, wither to pre-listen to a channel or to create a sub-mix. 650USD, available in summer.

WMD-performancemixer2   WMD_gws2-aperture

Other gear by WMD are an early prototype of the Gamma Wave Source 2 wavetable oscillator – harsh and gritty as ever but more flexible and easier to use. The APERTURE is a variable width bandpass filter with individual LP and HP resonance settings. A number of additional feedback options can make it sound nasty. Will be released in one to two months for ~350USD.

4ms-sampler 4ms are there as well and present a prototype of the DUAL TRIGGERED SAMPLER, a monster of an clockable audio sampling module with lots of memory banks, voltage control of important parameters. A SD card slot allows for really long sampling time. Use one channel to playback, the other to re-record the processed sample material. Infinite possibilities.

Its like this, NAMM u now:

Doepfer_Banner.. and also the black system of Mister Dieter Doepfer found its place on the stand #5014 with Doepfer and friends in between: Its the europeans next to WMD and friends, all the americans.. all together now. .. now .. is the time to think about the next step, friends and partners!
I am already busy with the superbooth, where we all will meet again .. after Namm, so .. be prepared and register now, if you like .. on Sunday its over! Yes, then its over! So if you cant find your companies name on this list now, you better ask your boss if he ever heard of the most crowded place in Hall 5.1 on Musikmesse over the last ten years? Yes, I think we were. And now? We dont go there anymore, but we welcome you to join us to have all the things of these days to do a bit more relaxed:
The trade show for electronic musical instruments and accessories is getting real: in Berlin. Next to the River Spree in the most beautiful House of Berlin, a lost formerly radio station with acoustically some of the best rooms all over europe, the Funkhaus.

so .. join SUPERBOOTH16 now.

on the namm again..

Marc_Shawn_Andreas_BillAfter European products are cheaper for our friends in the US now, we will join the upcoming NAMM show to let you touch and listen to the germans and their friends latest products on stand 6996 in Hall A! Join Europe: iTs CHEAP now!

The european money is cheaper than ever at least for people in the US and the UK now. Unfortunately for europeans the products from these countries are much more expensive now .. the other way round, so… a lot of our prices for modulars and others finally had to be increased now. So please accept the raise from 7% to 10% average with some very attractive modular series,
… we are sorry. New prices are online and valid now!

.. And finally: Be welcome and  join Musikmesse in Frankfurt/Germany – it will be April, 15th to 18th this year – spring time with even more new stuff for even better prices, .. perhaps!

NAMM news

On the Namm 2011 in Anaheim our dear american colluege analogue haven will present the dark time sequencer by doepfer and probably some more news from the uncounted american modular inventors, too. Our dear colluege Big City Music will also be there presenting the brilliant 4ms products, Karl Ekdahl Moisturizers, probably News and more by WMD and others.  We will stay tuned for other exhibitors and keep you informed about all the relevant things over here asap.

Rogers Bigcities music..

sbmeetswmdRoger Cordell alias Big city music had a smaller stand upstairs that was totally crowded with stuff from our friends from jomox, sherman, Eric Barbour, Eowave, the surfin step sequencer, the tetra sequencer, racks with analogue systems only, several mellotrones, a lot of stomp boxes and interesting small stuff. With all those manufacturers standing in front of their units it was totally crowded mostly but a bit lost in between all those software sellers next to them.
Here we met the symphatic young guys of WMD alias William Matthewson, Eric Barbour, many friends from europe and the inventor of the 4ms modules and pedals called Dann Green. Definitely we will go with them soon after such a symphatic chat we had there.
