Since its announcement at NAMM 2020, Doepfer’s new module has already generated quite a lot of attention, and rightly so. An exciting module with 10 CV outputs and one gate output that can set an entire system in motion.
The Doepfer A-174-4 is an innovative 3D Joystick featuring three axis. It allows to control three control voltages at once (X, Y, Z). The joystick offers the classic X and Y axis, as well as a third axis (Z), the rotation of the joystick. The button on top activates a gate.
The module outputs normal and inverted CV, including offset adjustment for each inverted output. Additionally it features four quadrant outputs (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) with adjustable overlap. A quadrant voltage becomes positive when the joystick is positioned in the quadrant in question.
The 3D joystick allows physical control of any Eurorack module with CV inputs. In this video, we show various patch examples where we use all three CV outputs from the Doepfer A-174-4 to control parameters of Doepfer modules (oscillators, filter and phaser), Cwejman Res-4 or SM-1.
Here we go again, for real, seriously. From 5th to 8th of May 2021 a fulminant SUPERBOOTH21 will take place again in the FEZ Berlin. The trade fair for electronic musical instruments and music will then again present itself as a real event with a modern concept adapted to the new times, with attending guests and attractive exhibitors, almost as usual – with an additional day of events.
As a selective international representation of a special industry for creative tools, Superbooth Berlin GmbH will present for the first time in 2021 a second event with similar ambitions.
From April 30th to May 2nd, 2021 the FEZ Berlin will also host SOOPERgrail, an international conference, trade fair and exhibition for guitar builders, luthiers, craftsmen and other innovative manufacturers. For several years now, guitar builders and synthesizer manufacturers from all over Europe have been meeting regularly at their own events in Berlin. Events where people exchange ideas about craftsmanship, discuss remarkable products, present them, or sell them. Long before both events had to be reduced to the virtual world in 2020, the idea of a common, larger platform for musical instruments and their users was already under discussion.
HerrSchneider: “We as organizers (Superbooth Berlin GmbH) are looking forward to the coming year. We see the current situation as a challenge and chance. With the friendly support of the European guitar builders, we now see the unique opportunity to prove that for a successful trade show it has to be about quality not quantity.”
Exhibitor and visitor numbers for the two events are strictly limited due to the changed circumstances. The well-known high quality of the discussions, meetings, concerts, demonstrations and workshops can only benefit from this. The calmer environment should also improve the situation when testing and exploring the exhibited products. For absent manufacturers, special concepts for digital and interactive integration into the event are in the makings.
Up to 150 exhibitors at SUPERBOOTH21 and 90 at SOOPERgrail meet a maximum of 500 visitors simultaneously in the building. Through a smart swap system, this number is doubled daily, allowing a total number of visitors of 4000 for SUPERBOOTH21 and 1000 for SOOPERgrail.
The hygiene concept for both events is already in the approval process. There are additional event areas in the green, further buildings around the FEZ Berlin and a space concept with tours and one-way routes through the exhibitions located in the buildings. This will ensure the most generous distribution of visitors on the exhibition grounds.
An additional exhibition day reserved only for the professional visitors of SUPERBOOTH21, as well as the Labour Day as conference afternoon, exclusively for exhibitors and invited guests of SOOPERgrail, support thereby the special character as a unique meeting and experience space for all participants.
What remains to be said
This year, many of the previous exhibitors have helped SUPERBOOTH21 to stay within the realm of possibility, for which the Superbooth Team would like to express their most sincere thanks once again. All in all, SUPERBOOTH21 will be able to present itself internationally again, with a flexible and sustainable concept the organizers can react to changing circumstances.
We are slowly internalizing, individually and as a society, the routines that enable us to find a way to deal with the global pandemic. Concrete hygiene concepts are being tested, we are getting used to the changed way of dealing with each other and we now know better than in May 2020 how to behave in order to enable a safe social interaction. Until spring 2021 we will continue to learn and new insights will be incorporated into the planning of SUPERBOOTH21 and SOOPERgrail – for two safe and unforgettable events.
UDO Audio will be in Berlin to celebrate the near release of their first synthesizer the Super 6 – to do so they will come to SchneidersLaden for a workshop. This will happen on December5th – that’s only the second chance to get your hands on one of these machines, the first was SUPERBOOTH19!
The Super 6 is a 12-voice polyphonic, binaural hybrid synthesizer. It is flexible, powerful and refined with a gorgeous analog sound character. Rich and evolving texturescan be easily created via the Super-Wavetable core. Results are shapeable using the binaural analog signal path and the flexible modulation system.
Workshop starts at 7:30pm – participation is free!
A little earlier (at 6pm) SchneidersLaden offers another workshop on Thursday: The Modular Beginner Workshop, it is also free of charge and you learn about the basics of synthesis and all you need to know about modulars. Find out more here.
The pre-sale for SUPERBOOTH19 has started. Until the end of December you can get the Early Bird tickets for SUPERBOOTH19 at a special price. The international trade fair for electronic musical instruments expects 250 exhibitors from all over the world. The fact that the annual event is more than just an ordinary trade fair has been proven again and again. From 9-11 May there will be dozens of concerts, workshops and presentations every day in the FEZ Berlin.
Electronic music and Berlin – that fits. SUPERBOOTH19 once again puts electronic sound generation at the center of the world’s largest trade fair of its kind. The trade fair has thus become a real highlight, both in Berlin’s calendar of events and in international perception, which not only excites the exhibiting companies.
For many exhibitors and guests the way to SUPERBOOTH19 leads via the free boat shuttle from Berlin-Mitte. This makes the journey to the FEZ Berlin, which is located a little outside the city, a city tour on the water and very easy. Here is also the first opportunity to have a chat and make contacts.
Organizer Andreas Schneider is delighted about the great response from all sides and the many exhibitor enquiries for SUPERBOOTH19: “Of the exhibitors from this year, 80% have already confirmed their renewed participation. Therefore we are also looking for new exhibition space in the FEZ Berlin to confirm the still open inquiries of new exhibitors and to accommodate the expected 8000 guests”.
There is more news from the organizers: The media coverage at SUPERBOOTH19 is to be democratized. In order to allow the exhibitors an undisturbed set-up and to give the arriving media equal opportunities in their reporting, a general camera ban will apply on the set-up days of the fair. Thus small and large media should have the same chances to discover the news of the fair on the opening day during the trade visitor time. Andreas Schneider says that “small and large media should have the same chances to discover new things here, that’s why we have always had the trade visitor time”. This compensatory approach is also reflected in other aspects of the trade fair – e.g. in the selection and positioning of the exhibitors, through which large and small manufacturers are presented equally side by side.

Make Noise leavin’ the past and are ready for the future .
Rob demonstrates for us the new Make Noise desktop synth O-COAST
A little well designed analog stand alone semi-modular unit, merging west- and east-coast philosophies into a powerful synth with unusual sounds and routing possibilities and an incredible warm low Bass. No filter needed – a harmonic generator and a wave multiplier are used to shape the sound. It should be ready in ~3 months for less than $500.
On the eurorack side they anounced their allready orderable modul TEMPI – a 6-channel, polyphonic time-shifting clock module. It provides an intuitive method for creation and recall of complex clocking arrangements within a modular synthesizer system. Using HUMAN and/ or MACHINE programming you could re-create most classic Clock Divider and Multiplier arrangements and then continue on to create new ones. Store up to 64 for later recall and Select them using control signals from within your system or the Select Bus.The price will be 269 $.
And we are glad to see them at Superbooth in berlin end of March.
Our friends Dieter and Sibylle again showed up again with two huge systems and a couple of small ones, displaying as well all their recent modules as new units and prototypes.
A-168 PWM Generator is able to alter pulsewidths of inputs e.g. triangles by changing them into squares with variable width. Basically it’s a comparator but smaller than the A-167.
A-110-3 and -6 are early prototpyes of Thru Zero VCOs capable of generating more than just sine waves.
A-106-5 SEM filter might be released in a vintage special edition with cream faceplate.
A-121-2 is a protoype for a new multi mode filter with individual inputs.
The most classic synth A-100 modules needed for creating an “old-fashioned” synth will be available in a vintage edition, sporting nicely black anodized faceplates, white legending and custom-made knobs. Price difference to standard version depends on the amount of knobs used for the module.
On top of the black cases you can see the new, universal, Miniature Power Supply with IEC mains socket.
The final pre-production version of the A-157 sub system was shown – a complex trigger sequencer with 8 rows, each with plenty of options like direction, first/last step, step inversion and mirroring. The expanders are included and can be mounted where you prefer them to be.
Have a look into our current showroom situation in the Spiegelsalon now and see this video to perhaps visit us again before we will move away before the end of this year, its great and you are welcome.
Dates and happenings like this are quite en vogue at the time worldwide, so .. as a rep for the Doepfer DistributionPatrick Detampel is currently in Barcelona on the modular day showing the AJH synth, Doepfer and Vermona modulars in general.
Basic Electricity this Friday, 10th April hosts a Hordijk Modular Special. The master himself, Rob Hordijk will give a tutorial patching his system and then Sam Weaver, Hoelzl & Lefort and Trio Brachiale will play music with Hordijk synthesizers. It’s two sessions, so check the website for the times!
A single Studio electronics code (4voice) is on sale now at Session Music Frankfurt: Even if there is no CS80 Filter mounted (you could have up to four different analogue hardware filter cards per voice, two ones are included) it can be read from the display (see pic). IF you want the CS80, its an option. If you can accept this and you want a Code NOW, buy it in Frankfurt!
Once a customer has given names and addresses to Schneidersladen to send an order to, we do so. If goods are NOT arriving these addresses, if they arrive defectively (YES, we make mistakes – sorry) or if they will be returned for other reasons, we usually offer a replacement or credit the money to send it back as soon as the goods are back to us or things are cleared. Once a shipment did arrive at an address of the customer and has been received by him or her or e.g. HIS MOTHER we do NOT wire back the money as long as the package within the goods has not been returned to us.
End of story.
In Germany at least there is a bank holiday for religious reasons this monday – so please do not be set up if we do not pick up the phone nore answering your emails. There is best weather over germany, the sun is shining so we are sitting in the green taking another bath mostly getting back to you on Tuesday with whatever you want. All the best to our synthie friends worldwide from sunny berlin ..
As a few other americans also, studio electronics aka makers of big and good analogue synths could not trust the germans as their general european distribution so they now signed a new partner called msl pro from the uk for such. Cause the prices of their products will probably increase a bit, I thought to let you know that we still have boomstarsin most versions at Schneidersladen. Good synths!
Sorry – Schneidersladen is closed over christmas for a longer period of time: December, 20th was the very last day in 2013 where we are able to sell you our very last few modules that we still send out on December 23rd before the end of the year will happen to all of us. We have the strong hope to re-open the existing showroom in 2014 on January, 2nd again and we hope that you wont miss us too much in between to see you again next year. so .. enjoy your life and have a good time!
.. slowly we got our shop working again, thank you for your patience! Just the SALE / SONDERANGEBOTE do not show the units it should let you see, but .. we work on it. Have a nice summer weekend, we will do the same.
We now cleared up our stock towards news of any kind with a limited summer sale. For the next few weeks there will be products on low prices as long as stock lasts – some because we stocked too many, some because we like you and others because they are not that perfect, find you own decision over here to order online or not or give us an email if questions are left to answer?
Now Ken macbeth starts to built up his desktopsynth micromac as show on Namm. It will be available as micromac desktop synth including a Kenton Midiinterface and as a micromac eurorack module. After the quite small unit will be a real analogue soundburner comparable with a (real) minimoog probably, I would like to recommend the desktop version even if its again some money more.
Shipping dates are still unclear – even if people on the web could have let you know something else. As usual we collect your preorders and get back to you for payments not before we are sure to get the units in soon.
To clear up our shop a bit while making you happy we collected a bunch of very special offers now listed in Schneidersladen here. IN addition there is this list called SALE with single units from our demo that you can only order per email once. So please dont be to sad if you dont get it cause somebody else has been faster, thank you!
..today released his vision of a fourvoice polyphonic version of the prominent and well done SEM-module. The Son of 4 Voice could be ready to ship in May but after Tom Oberheim is not the very youngest anymore we will forgive him any kind of delay and wait in patience.
With a little luck he can make it and will be coming over for the Musikmesse in April making some few presentations and interviews. That would be nice, tom.
.. showed on namm a DIY-synthesizer as an already mounted board with all components completely mounted up. – DIY?? – You (?) just have to case it up and combine it with the controls and connections of your choice making it your individual piece of hardware for an affordable price. It could become a modular or not, it could be a big synth or just a little filter.
His prototype of the little touchplate keyboard became even smaller this year, both units could still take a while to be released. We will keep you informed.
HerrSchulz und HerrSchneider join the NAMM show in south california and enjoy the weather. Please watch out for the news to follow now. ON three different booths three different shops are showing what they have: Analogue Haven, Noisebug and Big city music are the american shops competing each other. We visited all of them meeting all of our friends unfortunately in those different places apart from each other.
We are very happy to announce, that Mr. Tom Oberheim has choosen us to become his partner on selling his famous SEM modules in Europe now. Because the number of units that we can get is quite limited, we had to agree that they will be sold from us to the endcustomers only. A first shipment with patchpanel units is on the way to us already, see more on tomoberheim.com.
The tiny little four voice polyphonic digital synth called DeMoon by the danish inventor Gotharman is still late with production. We just got the message they wont come for the NAMM to finish up our order, so we will hopefully have stock again soon.
