SchneidersLaden Showroom opening again!

SchneidersLaden opens the showroom again. By booking an appointment you can finally visit SchneidersLaden at Kotti again. Booking an appointment not only ensures that only a few people are in the store at the same time, but also that the staff has time for your questions.  That’s the short version, for more passionate words, here is what HerrSchneider has announced:

My beloved specialty store will now reopen again for our beloved customers after this long abstinence, of course, but we still have some work to do: The habit of being “among ourselves” for more than a year has turned the showroom into a popular playroom for staff and family, where we would now like to welcome you back. At the moment we are still busy to reconnect all cables and power supplies, to combine the modules lying around into meaningful systems, to clean the counter again and to refill the coffee. At the latest from next Monday, June 21st – beginning of summer – we will be back for you:

In the showroom at the Kotti above the REWE we ask from now on for appointments, so that we have time for your questions, there we advise gladly, test, show and help with all questions about the products, here is also our workshop for returns or repairs, but we explicitly ask for prior appointment requests.

Our warehouse is located at Ritterstraße 3, where we are happy to receive reserved pick-ups every day from 2 p.m., this option is then also activated in the online store. If it should be something small spontaneously, we will also make this possible, but we can only accept payment by card there. We would like to avoid technical discussions here and unfortunately have to prevent this for the benefit of other waiting customers, we hope for your understanding. Unfortunately, we do not sell cash here either, our cash desk will remain at Kottbusser Tor until further notice. For the year 2022 we plan to merge the two locations, then everything will certainly be much easier and much more convenient, we are looking forward to it.

So, this is your way to SchneidersLaden Showroom and your pre-orders:

  • Showroom visits only by appointment via e-mail / phone
  • Pickup of pre-ordered goods on weekdays 2 to 6 pm at Ritterstr. 3, 10969 Berlin (card payment only)

Safety first at SchneidersLaden

On SchneidersBuero HerrSchneider posted a statement about the measures SchneidersLaden is about to take to navigate the shops employees and customers safely through the winter. Some of the measures are known from the first wave of Covid-19 in Germany in spring – the pick-up counter in the stockroom at Ritterstraße will be closed within this week. Customers are asked to order online or over the phone again.

For more complex support inquiries personal visits and auditions in the showroom at the Kottbusser Tor will stay possible (for now), but on appointment only with one of the dear team members. Customers are asked to follow some hygiene rules before playing around on all knobs and buttons in the showroom.

Buying things or pickups will not be possible at Kotti, only repairs and returns can be handled here. The phone support times will be expanded once the measures mentioned above are realized. Additionally the SchneidersLaden team is working on a digital support channel “to share and let you see, what we are showing you inside our beloved showroom.. soon.”

HerrSchneider: “Stay healthy and safe, please, don’t be frustrated and have a good time wherever you are.”

SchneidersLaden: Pick-up of your order or purchases with card payment now possible

Pick ups and purchases by card payment (without product advice) are now possible from 10 am to 6 pm at Ritterstr. 3, 10969 Berlin. (Very close to Kottbusser Tor.) Unfortunately, we cannot offer you any customer advice here.

We have rearranged our rooms in order to being able to guarantee a safe visit here. We look forward to seeing you again, but we are still working on a solution for personal consultations in our showroom at Kotti, please be patient.

We will reopen the showroom on June 2nd. – In order to protect the health of our customers and employees, access is only granted after prior arrangement by telephone or e-mail. This way we make sure that not too many people are in the shop at the same time and you get the advice you need.

Thank you and see you soon!

Schneidersladen Sample Pack for Superbooth20 Home Edition

SchneidersLaden created a sample pack for the Superbooth20 Home Edition – with all those noises and sounds that we all know from our visits to the showroom. Here is the video we made about it:

SchneidersLaden and especially the Showroom in Berlin Kreuzberg have a special atmosphere – as we can‘t experience this during these times we decided to bring some of the atmosphere to your home for the Superbooth20 Home Edition.

Download the sample pack at HERE and create something with it. Give your tracks some of that SchneidersLaden flavor with these raw sounds from the showroom.

IO Instruments @SchneidersLaden – workshop video

Despite IO Instruments being quite new to the scene, the whole team has lots of experience in the business, some members have been working for companies like MFB and ACL for example.

IO presented their products at Superbooth 2019 and aim to bring the audio quality of the 500 series modules into eurorack.

This workshop is an introduction to the brand and their first line of modules – lots of excellent sounds in there and some inspiring design choices.

New webshop for SchneidersLaden!

It has been a while since there was a significant update to the SchneidersLaden webshop. While some people loved the simplicity, there were a few flaws about it that could be described as annoying – or charismatic, if you want to use a nicer word. Here are some official words:

Yes, it’s true! Our vintage online shop is entering a well-deserved retirement. We have used the last days (months) to build a completely new shop. Have fun with it! -> SchneidersLaden.de

In order to prevent Covid-19 from spreading, our showroom will stay closed until further notice. You can reach us via phone or email as usual. Our logistics team is in good health as well and works diligently on your orders.

Livewire AFG’s and Frequensteiner are back

It’s been a while since you could buy a new Audio Frequency Generator by Livewire from a shop – two or three years ago there were a few on the market – since then (and long time before that) you had to be (very) lucky to find one on the used market. Now it is back! Preorder yours here.

The Audio Frequency Generator (AFG) is one of the most comprehensive VCOs in Eurorack format. It is a massive VCO with interesting features like the complex “harmonic animation” section. It provides an enormous variety of waveforms and timbres and allows extensive modulations. And it is designed with expandability in mind – there will be modules which are intended to further expand upon the AFGs sound shaping capabilities!

And more good news: Also the Livewire Frequensteiner will be re-stocked. HerrSchneiders favorite filter is still one of the best filters for that classic acid sounds and it offers one of the nicest band-pass modes on the market. Get yours here!

MODULAR BEGINNER WORKSHOP – every Thursday at 6pm

[et_pb_section admin_label=”section”] [et_pb_row admin_label=”row”] [et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text”]Hello modular newbies! SchneidersLaden is holding a Modular Beginner Workshop every Thursday at 6pm – participation is free! Here is what you can expect:
“Our goal is that you can confidently make your own first patch afterwards and have a good time and also meet like-minded people! Although we are nerds we won’t get too technical. Along the way we will show you basic patch techniques, the workings of our showroom, as well as tell you some stories about the history of (modular) synths and the ever evolving Eurocrack scene.
Feel free to come by even if you do not want to participate in the workshop, as the showroom will be open longer on Thursdays and you can get drinks at the bar. Not only when starting out with modular synthesizers this is a nice occasion to get some advice by us or other experienced guests, or share your knowledge with us! Try out some patches and have a drink or two. See you soon! Every Thursday at 6pm at the SchneidersLaden Showroom for a workshop – or every weekday between noon – 7pm.”

The weekly workshops at SchneidersLaden are suitable for musicians, artists and everyone interested in the generation of electronic sounds.

No knowledge required – the workshops are free of charge and open to everyone interested. The idea behind these workshops is to cover basic technical concepts – needed to understand the workings of modular synthesizers and synthesis in general and to enable the participants to make their first own patch and start creating electronic music. The modular synthesizer scene is a vibrant, supportive and creative space where new forms of art are experienced and boundaries of electronic music have been pushed. This new (old) way of creating electronic sounds had to be learned and artists around the globe have shown that it is possible to create a global community that shares ideas, skills and knowledge without focusing on profit. Small centers of encounter and exchange, such as SchneidersLaden in Berlin, played a significant role in this development. Every week Modular Beginner Workshops are held here. The workshops offer the opportunity to overcome the first obstacles on the way to understanding this extraordinary instrument. At the same time, the place offers the possibility of exchange, getting to know each other and making music together.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column] [/et_pb_row] [/et_pb_section]

Genki Instruments Workshop Thursday at SchneidersLaden

The next workshop at SchneidersLaden will take place next Thursday – March 5th / 7:30pm – SchneidersLaden is happy to welcome Genki Instruments for this event.

The Wave can be used as a gestural controller ring that allows you to easily control sound, shape effects and send commands with the motion of your hands. It offers six functions that can be used individually or combined in any way you like: Tilt, Pan, Roll, Vibrato, Tap, Click.

You can use Wave with Softwave, a software layer that allows users to intuitively map movements to MIDI messages or host AU/VST3 plugins. Wave also works as a stand alone MIDI controller that connects to your DAW. Each function can be mapped to control different parameters directly.

The Wavefront module is a Eurorack receiver module for Wave that allows the ring to connect to modular synthesizers. With Wavefront you can completely bypass the computer and bring unprecedented sound control, effect shaping and manipulation to modular setups.

In this workshop the makers of Wave and Wavefront will present what is possible with this unique interface for gestural control.

Here is a little example of the Genki Wave & Wavefront in action:

Update: NAMM 2020 News! Brenso, A-174-4, Dynamics 2806 and more

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” _builder_version=”3.22″][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”3.25″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” custom_padding=”17px|||||”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.0.9″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” custom_padding=”|80px||80px|false|false”]

The new year is just about two weeks old and we can already be sure to see some exciting new electronic instruments soon – actually we already saw some amazing new tools that leaked already. For the NAMM Show in Anheim, California we have heard about news from Frap Tools, Doepfer, Frap Audio, Kenton, Verbos Electronics and Vermona. They all will show products not yet mentioned, but there will also be already announced new products from Haken Audio, Analogue Systems, Buchla, Cwejman, Endorphin.es, E-RM, Flame and UDO Audio – all available for you to try out in Anaheim, CA..

Find some familiar faces by SchneidersLaden and Alex4, who brought well mixed and seasoned systems filled with modules by the brands they represent. You will find them at their excellent booth 10302 (Hall A).

The following brands will be there in person: Buchla, Doepfer, Endorphin.es, Haken Audio, Kenton, Frap Tools, Frap Audio, UDO Audio, Verbos Electronics, Vermona, but there will also be thematic stations with new modules on polyphony (Humble Audio, E-RM, Supercritical Synthesizers) and distortion (Animal Factory and TouellSkouarn) and generally again a (mainly) modular playground for the visitors of the NAMM Show.

Doepfer introduced four new modules: the A-174-4, a new joystick module with innovative functions, the A-183-4, a quad level converter, the A-130-8, an eightfold linear VCA / VC mixer, and the A-133-2, the slim version of the A-133 Dual VC Polarizer with some improvements and additions.

Also already announced is the new complex oscillator by Frap Tools – Brenso. It is what you would expect …and much more. Two thru-zero oscillators, a waveshaper, two wavefoldes a PWM circuit. It offers linear and exponential FM, complex modulation busses and an analog circuit that, when excited by an external trig it opens the wavefolder above its maximum level and then closes it down with a non-linear slope, whose length can be manually regulated. This solution can generate percussive tones with a very organic decay.

And there is not only Frap Tools anymore – but also its twin, Frap Audio. Frap Audio is developing high quality audio products not for eurorack but for the 500 series format! Their first product is the exceptional DYNAMICS 2806 that you can see in the picture above.

The details of the new Verbos Electronics products will be gladly repeated for you: besides a compact 42HP case for the Mini Horse module, there will be a set of dummy plates (consisting of 1HP, 2HP, 2HP with logo and a 4HP dummy plate), the Foundation Oscillator (12HP), a Noise & Filter module in 4HP and a revised version of the Amp & Tone (10HP, the filter is now transistor based).

UPDATE:

NAMM brought us one great new announcement from Animal Factory Amplification – Orobas, a dual vacuum tube VCA/saturator! This will be released as a limited edition – better be fast!

UPDATE 2:

Modal surprised with two new models of the still very new Modal Argon8. Now there are a desktop/rack module, a 61 Keys version and the original version with 37 keys, velocity and aftertouch.

All Argon8‘s are polyphonic wavetable synthesizer. The instrument’s eight voices each offer four oscillators with a rich wavetable repertoire and a morphing filter. There are three effect blocks for sound refinement. A total of eleven modulation sources, including two LFOs, three envelopes and a joystick that can be assigned to different destinations using a mod matrix. All in all a very complete concept with great looks and feels.

SchneidersLaden opens on December 23, 27 and 30!

SchneidersLaden will be open on December 23./27./30. – and will be back on January 6th, due to the necessary inventory.

Here are some more updates about Berlins biggest synthesizer Fachgeschäft:

The newly arranged showroom not only will have a permanent installation by Dadmachines, but also feature an original Moog Modular! In times of clone wars there has to be one small village (of indomitable Gauls) that still holds out against… forgot what I wanted to say…

…anyway: In case you didn’t notice, there are a lot of very nice sale items up on the SchneidersLaden website – find them here.

Back to the showroom: There is a new installation by Dadamachines in one of the showrooms. Play the musical ceiling!

And more great news? Yes:

Superbooth Berlin announces the first artists for SUPERBOOTH20 shortly before the end of the year. In addition, details of the further supporting and educational program, the boat shuttles and the official Aftershow events have been determined. And: There will still be a limited number of Early-Bird tickets until the end of the year!

  • The musical program of SUPERBOOTH20 is inspired by the music Berlin is famous for all over the world: Surgeon, Lady Starlight, Cosmin TRG, Pablo Mateo and Zavoloka perform live techno and electronic music at its best. Further top-class artists will be announced in spring 2020.
  • In the Bermuda Triangle between OHM, Discothek Melancholie 2 and C-Base, near the historic harbor, the official SUPERBOOTH20 Aftershow Events will take place – which can be reached perfectly during the event days with the soon bookable boat shuttles.
  • In the coming year, too, educating the next generation will be right at the top of SUPERBOOTH20’s list of priorities. More workshops will be offered for Berlin school classes. Besides Gammon and his Modular Synthesizer Ensemble, there will be DIY workshops for children and teenagers with Olivier von Leaf Audio in the morning.
  • Two little hints:
    • Until the end of the year the current Early-Bird discount level applies to all tickets for SUPERBOOTH20.
    • SUPERBOOTH20 now has its own online shop: In addition to the intended significant simplification in purchasing additional trade fair services, there are already some of the popular T-shirts and other merchandise available: shop.superbooth.com

Video: Schneidersladen Spezial – concerts by SchneidersLaden in SchneidersLaden

This was a very special event at SchneidersLaden – the SchneidersLaden Spezial concert! Our employees prepared some concerts, live improvisations and performances to show what they are doing besides selling synthesizers.

First of all Jessica and Carlo played a superb set together – with Jessica on the modular and Carlo on MPC, Drumatix, looper and effects.

Second was Phil who showed what he can do with a turntable, a delay and some looping – he’s a magician.

Miquel then presented one of his adventurous modular techno sets – with almost only Verbos modules and an Elektron Rytm.

2244 invited COP to join him on stage for one of their massive and haunting live sets.

It was great fun and there will be a second edition at some point. Hope to see you there! Enjoy the video:

UDO Audio – Super 6 workshop on Dec 5th

UDO Audio will be in Berlin to celebrate the near release of their first synthesizer the Super 6 – to do so they will come to SchneidersLaden for a workshop. This will happen on December 5th – that’s only the second chance to get your hands on one of these machines, the first was SUPERBOOTH19!

The Super 6 is a 12-voice polyphonic, binaural hybrid synthesizer. It is flexible, powerful and refined with a gorgeous analog sound character. Rich and evolving texturescan be easily created via the Super-Wavetable core. Results are shapeable using the binaural analog signal path and the flexible modulation system.

Workshop starts at 7:30pm – participation is free!

A little earlier (at 6pm) SchneidersLaden offers another workshop on Thursday: The Modular Beginner Workshop, it is also free of charge and you learn about the basics of synthesis and all you need to know about modulars. Find out more here.

Ableton CV Tools workshop at SchneidersLaden

This is gonna be a big one: SchneidersLaden and Ableton present a workshop about integrating modular synthesizers with Ableton CV Tools. Abletons Matt Jackson and Iftah from Skinnerbox will be there to teach you how CV Tools works and how it can expand the possibilities of your studio.

Workshop starts at 7:30pm – participation is free!

CV Tools is a Pack of ten devices for Live 10 Suite that generate and receive Pitch, Control, Clock and Trigger CV. Send and modulate CV to and from your modular setup or other CV-based gear and Ableton Live using a compatible dc-coupled audio interface. Use Live as the tempo leader or set it to follow your modular system clock.

Plus, even if you don’t own a modular setup, the Rotating Rhythm Generator and CV Utility devices add modular-style workflow inside Live or to your non-modular hardware setup.

Working in only one domain of electronic musical instruments like modular or software can be limiting over time – but it is easier than ever to break down the boundaries between computers, analog gear, across platforms, old or new technologies. A great opportunity to promote your creativity is the integration of modular synthesizers with your DAW. Ableton will present their tools to integrate your modular with one of the most popular DAWs on this planet.

See you on Thursday 28th of November – 7:30pm at SchneidersLaden.

MFB workshop and performance at SchneidersLaden on Hallowhat?! – Boo!

On Thursday 31st of October SchneidersLaden welcomes MFB – the drum machine and analog synth specialists from Berlin. The expertise of MFB has long been proven by many many drum machines, modules and complete synthesizers. The Tanzbär 2 for example brings everything to the table that made the MFB drum machines so popular in the past. With powerful analog voices, flexible digital voices and a really capable sequencer the Tanzbär 2 is easily one of the most advanced drum machine in the sub 1000 Euro range.

But there are also several synthesizers – from Keyboard synths like the
Dominion 1 to small, portable machines with huge sounds like the Dominion Club, which is a more compact version of the keyboard synthesizer.

We are looking forward to what MFB will bring with them and even more to what they will be doing with their machines. Put on your dancing shoes – this is going to be a fun night with some serious analog beats.

Thursday 31st of October – Halloween – 7:30 pm at SchneidersLaden

Now! Festival – with SchneidersLaden

The two synthesizer experts Sacha Ketterlin and Tom Körting from SchneidersLaden in Berlin play on modular synthesizers and then explain in a compact and consistent way how they achieve their musical results.

Oscillator, filters, envelopes and other ingredients are explained by Tom Körting and Sacha Ketterlin and made audible through basic patches. Thus the audience first experiences the application of the synthesizers sensually and then gets an insight into the functionality and application possibilities of these fascinating instruments, which have experienced a remarkable renaissance in the past 15 years. At the end of the discussion concert, the audience will have the opportunity to try out specially configured systems and dive into the world of electronic sounds.

As part of the NOW! festival from 25 to 28 October at PACT Zollverein, everything will revolve around electronic music, its analog beginnings and its further development – including (synthesizer) concerts and workshops.

Additionally Sacha Ketterlin plays a concert on his modular synthesizer on Saturday night, followed by a session by Roman Flügel.

A congenial constellation, a night of electronic music! The concerts of the Berlin artist and composer Sacha Ketterlin (SchneidersLaden) are always a discovery of the technical basics of electronic sound production. Using his own modular systems and synthesizers, he produces sound and rhythm worlds in his concerts and DJ sets that range from ambient and techno to various musical styles.

THIS THURSDAY – Workshop and Performance with VPME!

This week SchneidersLaden starts the new Workshop Series! The first guest will be Vladimir Pantelic aka VPME – creator of the Euclidean Circles and the new Quad Drum Voice. He will be joined by Matze from Instant. We’ll learn more about Vladimirs modules and the ideas behind them.

The Euclidean Circles has found many many fans for being so simple and complex at the same time – six sequences arranged in three LED circles that give you excellent visual reference of what is happening. And the signature element of the Euclidean Circles also made it to the latest VPME module – the Quad Drum Voice. This complex digital module has so much more to offer than it first seems. Each voice can either be a drum synth, wavetable oscillator or sample player and there is a mixer, EQ and compressor built in!

Vladimir will show you what his modules are all about and Matze how they can be used to play them live. Should be fun!

See you at this special workshop – Thursday 7:30pm at SchneidersLaden!

You’re new to modular? Why not join the SchneidersLaden Modular Beginner Workshop? Every Thursday – 6pm – at SchneidersLaden!

Verbos Takeover workshop videos now online

Verbos Electronics took over SchneidersLaden for a special evening with workshops by Tom Holroyd and Mark Verbos himself. The workshops are covering most of the Verbos Electronics product line and give you an idea about what the modules are capable of and what the makers of these fine instruments had in mind when designing the modules.

The first part of the video documentation of the September 2019 event is the Verbos Systems for Beginners Workshop presented by Tom Holroyd. Learn the philosophy and handling of a Verbos system.

The main workshop with Mark Verbos is about Advanced Patching a Verbos System – including the new Mini Horse and Control Voltage Processor and dives deeper into different patching techniques.

And if you still want to learn more about Verbos modules, check out the Verbos Electronics YouTube channel for some nice performance and module overview videos and the SchneidersLaden YouTube and Vimeo channels for the latest workshop videos.

FLAME Workshop & Performance //Thursday 7:30pm

On Thursday September 5th SchneidersLaden presents a workshop with FLAME – not only will you be able to learn more about their many new designs, there will also be a performance part with music made on the Mäander!

Flame is a synthesizer brand from Berlin that is around for longer than most modular manufacturers. Berlin based inventor and FLAME-founder Per Salzwedel developed uncountable custom-made little instruments and helpers for individual needs such as small MIDI infrared controls, step sequencers and MIDI/CV interfaces. Nowadays the pallet of products ranges from modular utilities, VCOs, filterbanks to innovative standalone desktop synthesizers.

Just a few weeks ago FLAME released a new synthesizer concept in standalone format – the Mäander. A beautiful sounding synthesizer with four-voice polyphony, a filterbank and a wavetable oscillator. During the event at SchneidersLaden there will be a focus on the Mäander and selected modules by FLAME. What the Mäander is capable of will be presented by Thomas Wagner – who will play a performance for the audience at SchneidersLaden. Wagner is known for his projects Flirren and Herr Blum.

Tom Körting will talk you through this special machine and several of the highly interesting eurorack modules by FLAME. Check out FLAMEs latest developments – there are some really affordable and convenient designs available now, especially in terms of automation and live performance. Find them all here.

Some thoughts about the Metasonix RK6

The Metasonix RK6 is a low-pass filter based on a tube-design. In this video we show one of the great strengths of this module – adding warmth to digital oscillators. Our sound source in this example is the E-355 – we send the signal alternately directly into the mixer and through the RK6 and then into the mixer. No other effects are used. Why are we doing this? That’s what Phil can explain best:

“Often customers ask me how to add some warmth to a digital signal or sample. I never really had an answer ready, because many devices saturate and distort nicely but lack in delivering on precisely this cliché. When it comes down to it, to make it sound warm all the ugly, cold and overexaturated parts of the signal should be eliminated. The beautiful parts should be captured and enhanced. The Metasonix RK6 closes this gap like a hero. Listen to the linked Video below to hear how it forms a round piece of music from of a cold, stiff wavetable sequence. The 2nd part of the video contains pure Metasonix DNA.
Conclusion: It is ugly but closes a crucial gap in your soul.”

Modern filter designs

In recent years, the complexity of individual Eurorack modules has increased significantly, and more and more functions are behind ever smaller front panels – although here, too, the rule is confirmed by exceptions. The fact that Doepfer, for example, is now putting on a “Slim Line Series” seems to confirm this assumption.

One reason for this trend is certainly the search by musicians for the highest possible functionality in a small space – Eurorack cases may have become cheaper, but space in the rack is still valuable. This is also where the fact comes into play that many musicians want to be mobile with their system or that space in the (home) studio is simply limited.

But now to the actual topic: In the last few months a few filter modules have stood out in particular, which somehow follow the development described above. These filters are basically neither bigger nor smaller than other filter modules, but they add a high degree of flexibility to the classic filter design. For example, they can blend between different filter types, offer Q compensation, saturation levels, many CV control options, as well as well-chosen parameters and sophisticated sound aesthetics. These features are all not new, but to see more and more filter modules offering these possibilities, gives the impression of a new “standard” of what a filter should be able to do.

In the following I will discuss three modules:

Altar by Ritual Electronics

Dendrites by River Synths

Filter Threek 13700 by Funkstill

ALTAR has an unusual morph between BP-LP-HP and is very good at keeping a constant level. It has a slope steepness of 18dB and very well designed saturation.

The second module of the French manufacturer Ritual Electronics was given the name Alter. It is characterized by the fact that the different filter modes (BP-LP-HP) can be blended by a dedicated knob and CV. No new feature, but one that is not as common as one wish. The edge steepness of 18dB is also relatively rare, which gives this module a well-balanced middle way between Oberheim softness and Prophet 5 punch. The possible saturation of the input signal by asymmetric clipping as well as the powerful and always musical resonance contribute to this.

All in all, this complex filter module feels like a coherent whole. At no time you ask yourself why the manufacturers didn’t work on the parameter ranges here and there, or why they didn’t add another CV input – because everything was thought of here. A big, flexible and distinct sound meets a tidy front panel, which can be enjoyed by beginners as well as experts.

DENDRITES truly is a clever experimental toolbox. It really has its own sound. Vintage, but clear.

The next candidate was developed in the Netherlands and is much more complex than Alter, but still very manageable. The River Synths Dendrites features 16 filter modes, three different resonance modes and two overdrive modes behind a very compact front panel. Together there are 96 combinations of these three ingredients. But you don’t have to worry about losing control, because the central control element allows you to switch between the filter modes while providing nice visual feedback. Equipped with an LED ring, Dendrites shows you which filter characteristics the circuit is currently dedicated to – among them various low-pass, bandpass and high-pass filter types, as well as two phasers and four mixed filter types.

Further adjustments to achieve the desired sound aesthetics can be made with two switches and the input gain. Especially the adjustment of the resonance behavior is to be emphasized here – with it the character of the Dendrites can be changed drastically. K-Style stands for a classic, aggressive style that one is used to from old Korg synthesizers. Vintage stands for a rather soft and round, stronger coloring behavior. Q-Comp regulates the relationship between filtered audio signal and resonance and ensures a different presence. The Dendrites is thus up to almost any task, always sounds high-quality and offers additional extras like switchable FM, i.e. linear and exponential FM.

FILTER THREEK 13700: Strong references to its role model, the Oberheim Matrix Filter (which in turn is a further development of the Oberheim SEM).

Not only does the Filter Threek 13700 by Funkstill have a slightly more complicated name than the previously described modules, it also offers a more complex circuit and user interface. Here you can really get deep into the signal path – which of course increases the possibilities this module offers, but also results in a steeper learning curve. So much for starters – the Threek 13700 filter wants you to get its attention, but it also rewards the user with wide spectral possibilities and complex morphing.

Funkstill has implemented two filters – two serially linked multimode circuits. The first stage can be operated in a high pass, bandpass, low pass or all pass mode with a slope of -12 dB per octave. The second filter is a high pass or low pass circuit. The slope here is -6 dB per octave. The combination of both stages makes all kinds of complex filter shapes possible. Thanks to the 2-pole output and 1-pole input, it is also possible to use the filters individually. Resonance is available in two very different variants, Q-compensation is also implemented – this way you can counteract the loss of bass frequencies with increasing resonance values.

What is the bottom line? It requires training, but is also a real studio/sound design tool – perhaps on the level of the Rossum filters.

This is by no means a full review of these modules – this text and he short videos are only there to get an impression of what to expect from these versatile modules.

Video: E-RM presenting polygogo at SchneidersLaden

A few weeks ago Max from E-RM presented the prototype of their first module for eurorack – the polygogo. He explains how finding a GIF online was the initial spark to explore the unusual synthesis method the polygogo is based on. The polygonal synthesis is a kind of graphical complex amplitude shaping method. With the help of the built-in modulation options, polygonal synthesis in polygogo opens up a wide range of sonic possibilities from clicky pinged sequences to unique dark thunderstorms, bass lines, leads and colored noise.

During the workshop this mighty stereo oscillator proved to have a very wide range of possible timbres. The idea of sculpting a contour on the screen of the module, which is then transformed into sound, works really well and invites the user to interact with the module.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Your next chance to check out the polygogo is during SUPERBOOTH19 where E-RM will have a booth (W320). Additionally the module will be shown during a lecture concert on Thursday. And we have to wait for the official start of SUPERBOOTH19 for the final colour selection, price and availability.

Video: Looking at Raster.Labor – with Frank Bretschneider

Raster.Labor is an installation project by Raster.Media with contributions by Byetone + Mieko Suzuki, Dasha Rush, Frank Bretschneider, Grischa Lichtenberger, and Robert Lippok.

Premiered at the CTM Festival 2019, we took the chance to bring this great project to SchneidersLaden and explore the ideas behind it with one of the creators – Frank Bretschneider. During the planning stage of the installations Frank discussed some different approaches for the central machine of all five installations with us. The beating heart on all five tables was a modular synthesizer, providing control voltages for modules and other sound generating devices that are forming the individual parts of each installation.

In this video Frank Bretschneider goes into detail on how the project evolved from the idea to the technical realization.

The next chance to see the installation is at SUPERBOOTH19, from 9th to 11th of May 219 at FEZ Berlin.

Video: Haken Audio & La Voix du Luthier – Onde

Learn about the history and development of one of the most expressive and versatile electronic music instruments around! The Haken Continuum Fingerboard has been around for several years and is still being developed further and further. It gets its expressiveness from the incomparable surface that acts as the user interface and offers real-time continuous control in three dimensions for every finger that is placed on the playing surface!

As well as presenting the Continuum Christophe brought a special speaker with him, to give us the very rare chance to hear the La Voix du Luthier Onde – this exceptional approach to the construction of a speaker. There is no traditional speaker cone inside, only acoustic exciters transmitting the vibration into the wood. It is the same principle as for a guitar: the strings themselves make very little sound, but they are transmitting their vibrations to the soundboard through the bridge, and what you hear is the sonic amplification via the soundboard. In case of the Onde the exciter is acting as the bridge and transmits the electric “vibrations” to the wood. The Onde gives you a very immersive sound and the chance to experience electronic sound sources in a totally new way.

This incredible sound can hardly be recorded – so make sure to come to SUPERBOOTH19 to get another chance!

Workshop with Instruō! Thursday 4th of April – 7:30pm

Join us for a special workshop with Jason Lim from Instruō !

Instruō is a manufacturer of innovative euroack modular designs with a unique appearance. The most special module in the portfolio of Instruō might be the Scíon – it is composed of a biofeedback sensor and a quad random CV generator. The module can be used to transform data obtained from plants and other organisms into music. In short: You can finally jam with your favorite cactus! For more predictable compositions there is the very capable Harmonàig quantizer. And if you are into complex VCOs, Instruō provides you with an extra complex complex VCO named Cš-L.

But this will not be a product show, we’ll here some live music with these fine modules talk about the philosophy of Instruō and you’ll get the chance ask all the questions you ever had about Jasons modules.

See you on Thursday 4th of April – 7:30pm at SchneidersLaden! And if you are only about to start your modular journey, join us for the Modular Beginner Workshop at 6pm.

How to find us:

@SchneidersLaden – Kottbusser Tor above the REWE supermarket (use the door within the REWE entrance – ring the „schneidersladen” bell – and knock LOUD on our metal door on the first floor)

Modular at Musikmesse with Sacha K. & Tom K.

Whoever has a ticket for the Musikmesse in Frankfurt can try out various combinations of modular systems until Friday. The space and the modular systems are under the care of the nice gentlemen that you see on picture above Tom K. and Sacha K..

HerrSchneider and Musikmesse organized a 90 square meter big room for modular synthesizers at this years Musikmesse. The room is dedicated to educate school children in this exciting form of art. This is a contribution to building a following generation of synthesists, sound artists and musicians, as well as a chance to present the possibilities of modular synthesizer to contribute to physics, math and music classes to school teachers.

This mission will be continued and enhanced during this years SUPERBOOTH19, where the whole Saturday will be dedicated to education with special workshops for pupils and students.

Schools, universities and other educational institutions are welcome to ask for reduced ticket prices for the educational Saturday at SUPERBOOTH19. More info can be found here.
