Video: Jürgen Michaelis from Jomox – live at SchneidersLaden

Jürgen Michaelis played a live performance for us during his workshop at SchneidersLaden. He brought the unique Resonator Neuronium to play alongside the Alpha Base and T-Resonator. After that he talked us through the interesting construction of and relation between the T-Resonator and Resonator Neuronium and answers questions from the audience. This time in German.

SchneidersLaden presents SUPERBOOTH19

THURSDAY: JOMOX Workshop with Jürgen Michaelis – at SchneidersLaden

Without Jürgen Michaelis the history of electronic music in Berlin might be a bit different. More than twenty years ago the techno community in Berlin was searching for the perfect kick drum sound (and still is?!). TR 909s were rare and that’s where Jürgen comes into play – he knew how to build a proper analog kick drum and so he did – and with some additions like a sequencer and more instruments, the legendary Jomox Xbase 09 was born!

Right from the beginning the sound of Jomox drum machines was so convincing, that artists like Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Martin Gore, The Prodigy and many many more have been using Jomox machines.

But this workshop will not only be about kick drums – we are looking further into the history of Jomox, where the Resonator Neuronium was an important cornerstone. This was the first realization of a device with Resonant Neuron Synthesis. The new paradigms that formed this machine are named complexity, order from chaos, self organization of complex systems, networking and cooperation. From a certain complexity onwards a system is not only the sum total of its parts but a greater whole which gains totally new attributes than its sub structures.

The world of thoughts, that’s what we think – is the world, because actually everything, our entire perception, the world we believe in the 1400cm^3 brain to see and the processing of the senses goes along with a thought. Even a feeling is born from a thought. The old saying of Descartes – I think, therefore I am – is taken to extremes once again in the context of neuronal sensory research. The mantra of cognitive research: consciousness comes from the brain and is the product of thought processes.

So is the world really just a thought? Quite clearly: No.
But it is fun to listen to the resonance processes of the neurons and experience the power of the cosmic basic forces of resonance and networking directly.

Announcement of new workshop series at SchneidersLaden!

At SchneidersLaden we don’t only sell synthesizers – we advise and support you to find the instrument you really want – we share our knowledge with you, we learn from you and we organize events: Workshops, Performances and Concerts! Every Thursday you can join a free Modular Beginner Workshop at 6pm. Often we’ll have this workshop followed by another workshop for which we invite manufacturers or artists to share their vision with us or to play a concert or performance.

Some examples of these events can be seen in our new trailer – others can be found here in full length.

And our latest three additions to our Workshop-video-collection can be found here!

Upcoming workshops

But the important news of today is the announcement of our new workshop series starting February 14th! CTM Festival just closed its doors for this years edition, but we thought we take one of our personal highlights and bring it to the SchneidersLaden showroom! Together with Frank Bretschneider we will have a close look at how an installation project like Raster.Labor comes to life. Until mid-April there will be more workshops every Thursday – starting at 7:30pm – right after the weekly Modular Beginner Workshop.

Jürgen Michaelis of Jomox @ Schneidersbüro

Juergen Michaelis – the head of JoMoX Berlin – giving insights of the history with HerrSchneider once entering the world of synths and drummachines roundabout 20 years ago to help Jürgen as a sales rep, after they met each other in a totally different world. Introducing the wonderful concert of Panic Girl and Jericho on Superbooth17 and showing the gig of Juergen himself with his AKASHA synth on Superbooth16.

And also – the live introduction of the ALPHA BASE by the inventor himself, is showing the fun he has with his own baby – it is passion. Jürgen Michaelis is building the famous Jomox drum machines for almost twenty years. The Alpha Base came out this year and it is the most advanced drum machine built by Jomox so far. The almighty kick drum is once again the backbone of this instrument and it is supplemented with the analog percussion voice you might know from the M.Brane machines Jomox is building. With the additional sample based instruments and a FM synthesizer bult into the Alpha Base, this is a pretty complete machine that will find lots of use in studios and on stages around the world.

Superbooth17 – Jomox

Jomox Alpha Base

Jürgen Michaelis presents his new Alpha Base at Superbooth17. The drum machine features a hybrid design with eleven instruments, sampling capabilities and sequencer.

Kick and snare circuits of the Alpha Base are fully analog. The latter is a complete MBrane voice, meaning it can also be used to create percussion hits, cow bells, claves, toms and so forth. Six other instrument channels produce sound with the help of sample players plus metallic noise generators. Results are fed into analog filters and VCAs for processing. Two of these drum voices feature VCFs especially designed for sculpting hi hats. The other instances come equipped with multimode filters. (Low pass, band pass and high pass modes / -12 dB per octave).

Additionally, there are two completely digital instrument channels. Again, samples are used to generate sound. – It is even possible to record short audio snippets of up to four seconds directly into these channels (WAV / AIFF format, 16 Bit / 48 kHz). Results can be allocated to other sample based drum voices. For storing data, a SD card slot was implemented.

Last but not least, the Alpha Base features a FM Synth with four operators. Thanks to its six note polyphony, users can not only create wicked percussion sounds, but chords and melodies as well. All instrument channels possess a comprehensive set of editing options and modulators. For refining sounds, delay and reverb effects were implemented.

The Alpha’s sequencer offers eleven tracks, pattern can have a length of up to 64 steps. Besides notes, it is also possible to record parameter changes. The last step of a pattern is definable per track. (Great for polyrhythmic beats.) Shuffle and micro step options, roll and flam functions plus parameter locks give beats a nice, groovy touch. A chaining mode allows users to link patterns.

For external control and synchronization, the Alpha Base was equipped with MIDI-DIN, USB and DIN-Sync connectors.

More information on the Alpha Base can be found at the Jomox website.

2BE EXCELLENT TO EACH OTHER

1439482871292570_Cbase_open_moonBerlin based C-Base.org is an association and “the motherhood of hackspaces“copied worldwide in between – as declared in this feature. With their twentiest birthday (20 years!) there is an interview with an early member called macro online now explaining the whole story (in german) with a lot of nice pictures from history and some nice rooms that you normally dont see. Read more about it here, if you like.

superbooth3

The first product presentation I once made as SchneidersBuero about 15 years ago was introducing the SUNSYN by JoMoX and other products with a very early livestream and concerts by TokTok and others from that C-Base still in the Oranienburger Strasse, Berlin those days. Their faboulus GATE – see it on the pics – has also been decorating our very first Superbooth Frankfurt in 2002 (see pic2).

on the namm again..

Marc_Shawn_Andreas_BillAfter European products are cheaper for our friends in the US now, we will join the upcoming NAMM show to let you touch and listen to the germans and their friends latest products on stand 6996 in Hall A! Dieter Doepfer will be there, Vermona, MFB, Manikin, JoMoX, Kenton, Eowave and BR-Laser from Austria having the Terminal in his case. We will be next to the stand of our american friends such as Verbos, WMD, Snazzy ,4MS, the Harvestman and many others probably brining loads of NEWS.

Join Europe: iTs CHEAP now!

The european money is cheaper than ever at least for people in the US and the UK now. Unfortunately for europeans the products from these countries are much more expensive now .. the other way round, so… a lot of our prices for modulars and others finally had to be increased now. So please accept the raise from 7% to 10% average with some very attractive modular series,
… we are sorry. New prices are online and valid now!

.. And finally: Be welcome and  join Musikmesse in Frankfurt/Germany – it will be April, 15th to 18th this year – spring time with even more new stuff for even better prices, .. perhaps!

Mellotron Sounds ..

P1120587The sounds of the Memotron – the (digital copied) original digital copy of the (original copied) mellotron – are  a collection of 100 included sounds from now on! All the remaining memotron units that will be selling new should have this. These ones are getting short anyway, a new model will follow up soon.
Join the NAMM show in Anaheim to check this out: Manikin electronic, Doepfer, Vermona, MFB, JoMoX, EOwave, and all the american modular brands will join the american Music show in January with a collective stand in Hall A. So if you can, be around from January 22nd til 25th, 2015.

! Schneidersladen 2.0 !

attentionWe have a new webshop, now.  All of our existing clients will get an email latest tomorrow (july, 2nd) with their new login and pass to be able to see existing orders, to add new ones or so.
Some things will not work fine directly, some things will be better, please let us know about this per mail to shop@schneidersladen.de . WE will go ahead working it out. Thank you and good night.

Moonwind, Magma?

There is a new range of names for new products of well known manufacturers as it seems:  Moonwind by JoMoXjmxmw_full seems to be a very smart sound performer and the Magma by Eowave is a complex synth/sequencer tool to have good melody fun with an analogue synth. Both are available from stock now!

and finally the Boomstar by Studio electronics could become a smart desktop synth, too.

Big City Music

p1060549(NAMM 2012/3) Roger Cordell was showing on his booth again the swedish Mellotron-clone by his friend Markus Resch. Unfortunately that one is a bit unhandy compared to the original slim one called ‘Memotron’, what is quite often used by experienced artists in the world for polyphonic sounds of the 70s.
Apart from that they was showing a very first (pre serial?) model of a moonwind unit by JoMoX and the ‘Koma’ synth by EOWave from France. Funnily ‘Koma’ as a name has alredy been introduced for a brand of quite innovative stompboxes just a few months ago.

..a JoMoX 999?

.. became a rare unit in between and can now once be bought used from one of our dear clients in need for some money. If your interested please send an email or just call and ask for Carlo, please. Even more used stuff, demo units that we would like to get rid of and other specials can be found in an extra category called all Specials / Sonderverkäufe on our website SCHNEIDERSLADEN. It will be filled and updated towards every weekend from now on.

About forums ..

NO, Wowa Cwejman is not going out of business and .. NO the JoMoX 888 is not so buggy, that you can not use it on stage and .. NO .. please do not believe everything that has been written to the internet.
Stromkult is a blog with that what we know about those units that we buy from some small manufacturers we like. If WE tell something about them this is mostly what they told us earlier and it could be true. And YES .. Mr. Wowa Cwejman Is working on new modules and he will release them, but not one day before they will be ready. We are looking forward to this and  all the other interesting releases in our little market, and – YES, it could take a little longer sometimes!
