Video: Modular synth workshop with Tobi Neumann and Fadi

In November Tobi Neumann and Fadi turned Schneidersladen showroom into a (private) lesson on how to use a modular synthesizer not only as inspirational or improvisational tool but as an instrument that seamlessly integrates within a professional studio environment and workflow. Tobi Neumann’s career spans 2 decades as DJ and producer for labels like Cocoon, Playhouse and artists like Miss Kittin, Chicks on Speed and 2Raumwohnung. He is also what one could call an early adaptor of Eurorack and a longtime and cherished customer of our little store. Together with Fadi he forms a highly productive team. Their homebase is Apollo Studio Berlin which is centered around a modular system. With years of experience the two will provide insights into working with ModularSynths.

Enjoy this video of a special workshop at Schneidersladen showroom.

Gammon and the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble at Bludenz

(All pictures by BARBARA WINKLER)

Our dear friend Gammon has had a very busy November. In the coming weeks we will be covering his different projects with the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble at Define festival (Denmark), concert at Grätzel Galerie (Vienna) and many more. Starting with the „Tage zeitgemäßer Musik” (days of contemporary music) at Bludenz. This festival has been founded 29 years ago. Gammon started his Modular Synthesizer Ensemble seminars at SUPERBOOTH17 and you can have a short insight into this here.

To Bludenz Gammon brought a dozen modular synthesizers for the festival of contempory music. Five pupils from Bludenz took part in a three day seminar exploring different modular synthesizers and composing and rehearsing for a concert. They all attend the music section of the high school in Bludenz and learn one instrument each, but have never been using a synthesizer. For them it was the first contact with this electronic musical instrument. Contemporay music is often not recognised by young people. They tend not to realize how wide the field of music can be and that it does not always need rythms and melodies. Therefor the Tage zeitgemäßer Musik at Bludenz are an important and very welcome institution for cultural education. The festival set a focus on cultural education of young people with the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble by Gammon.

Because this project is about cultural and not technical education the creative and musical work started right after a brief introduction into the basic functional principles of modular synthesizers. Very quickly the group was able to develop and create different musical voices to interact and complement each other in a unique composition. All participants had different modular systems with different sonic qualities and potentials. These different “voices” were the technical basis for the ensemble. With a very basic introduction to the wide field of modular synthesis the participants were able to work out specific sounds and express themselfs. One piece at a time was worked out. Starting with individual sounds that were then arranged in structures to form a performance or concert in the end. These young people managed to get a good sens for each other and the music and formed a convincing group of musicians – an ensemble.

Gammon, who had already offered this method in Berlin and Denmark, was very pleased with the athmosphere and outcome of this seminar:”The youngsters got involved and played very well. My main goal is making music together. The project gave us all a lot of pleasure, and the audience was impressed by what can be achieved in three days.” And the visebilety in the community was a central issue. Therefor the venue was chosen to be in the middle of the city, in a former shoe store.

>>> 3 days of modular events in Berlin >>> Workshop/Concert/Party

The next three days will be exciting for those who like to witness modular synthesizers being used in front of an audience. The modular journey starts tomorrow 6pm at Schneidersladen where Tobi Neumann and Fadi from Apollo Studio Berlin will give some insights into their work as professional producers. They will talk about their use of the modular in a studio environment and reveal some of their special tricks to the audience. If you want to participate you can find more info on how to register to this free workshop here. Don’t miss this special evening.

On Friday the #24th edition of Basic Electricity will take place in Berlin. This time the impressive König Otto in Neukölln will be the location for the longest running modular event of the German capital. The evening is titled “The Sense of Sound” where Thomas Ankersmit and others will be pushing the limits of sound! The doors open at 8pm and music starts at 9pm – tickets 10€. More info here.

On Saturday one is really spoilt for choice … There is the fantastic Colin Benders playing live at Ben Klocks Photon party at Berghain and there is the seven (!) hour modular liveset of Berlins Modular Gang at Oscillate at //about blank. Good news is: if you can’t make it to //about blank, or not for all seven hours – Cashmere radio will be broadcasting live, all night long! But don’t get this wrong – go there in person. The Oscillate partys are really good. In case you prefer going to Berghain, be prepared for a Colin Benders modular live performance that is more techno than what you might have heard from him in the past. This is going to be the first Photon party at Berghain and should be a great night! Wherever you decide to go – have fun and relax – the next modular synthesizer is not far away!

Modular Synthesizer Workshop at We Make Waves

The modular synthesizer workshop at We Make Waves, Berlin-based festival and conference made for women, trans and non-binary people was very well attended and all participants were incredibly eager to learn. Many of them were long-time musicians – from singers to techno producers. They were very interested and took an active part in the workshop, so many questions were asked and answered. In the beginning Jessica and Jackie from SchneidersLaden introduced themselves and talked a bit about their passion for modular and their general background. Afterwards all participants were asked to come close to the modular to learn something about some of the core modules of the modular synthesizer. Afterwards there was an overview about the integration and connection of the synthesizer with an Acidlab Miami drum machine and a mixing desk. From there on it was all about patching. Everyone was invited to contribute to the patch and therefor was a part of the music that was created.

The workshop lasted for 2 hours – the last 30 minutes were used to hand over the modular systems and the Acidlab Miami to the participants. They were able to put down a pretty decent and surprisingly interesting acid techno jam.

The workshop was a good opportunity to bring people into contact with modular synthesizers, that otherwise maybe wouldn’t have taken the step. Therefor there will be more of these workshops, for example at SchneidersLaden showroom and SUPERBOOTH18 in the future.

Watch the Event Calendar for more modular synthesizer related events.

Video: Richard Devine and Surachai – Workshop pt. 2

Richard Devine and Surachai visited the showroom at SchneidersLaden the day after their concert at Berghain. The best thing about it is that they have made a whole workshop out of it. Richard Devine showed his live rig and explained his unmistakable approach of playing a eurorack system. He is one of the most important modular experts and a key figure to the eurorack scene. Within our scene we all have different approaches to patching and our own uniquely assembled systems. During this workshop we shared patch-ideas and argued about favourite modules. Richard talked about his beginnings with creating music and using synthesizers and how he puts his musical ideas into practice today.

If you have missed part one of this workshop watch it here.

The second part begins with a performance similar to the performance at Berghain the night before. Then Richard is answering questions by the audience. Themes like special firmwares and patch methods come up that make his modular Synthesizer this special alien insectoid machine.

Theremin Workshop by Dorit Chrysler at We Make Waves Festival

Dorit Chrysler will give a 1 hour theremin workshop using 10 Moog thereminis at We Make Waves Festival. We Make Waves is a new festival and conference for women, trans and non-binary individuals in the music industry, with its first edition taking place in Berlin from 9-11 November 2017. The aim is to connect existing networks and communities in Berlin and beyond — our doors are open to people of all race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, income, educational background or physical ability. Dorit Chrysler has been dubbed a superior wizard of the theremin. An Austrian-born, New York based composer, producer and singer, Chrysler is the co-founder of the NY Theremin Society and founder of the first school for theremin, Kid Cool Theremin School. As much as the theremin is a tool in Chrysler’s electronic instrument arsenal, she’s also one of the most visible thereminists spreading the gospel of the mysterious sounding instrument which is basically played by massaging air.

Gammon – MODULAR SYNTHESIZER ENSEMBLE November 2017

Gammons MODULAR SYNTHESIZER ENSEMBLE is on tour during November 2017. The concept for these workshops is to create a Modular Synthesizer Ensemble with the participants and to be able to play an improvised concert in the end. The Modular Synthesizer Ensemple is supported by SchneidersLaden and very pleased to see Gammon spreading knowledge about modular synthesizers and encouraging people to play with instruments they may not have even heard of before.

The workshops start with the very basic terms and guides the participants all the way to be able to play freely and improvised on modular synthesizers. The participants work independently, max. in groups of 2, on the Modular Synthesizer. They are thus directly involved in the process of creating the sounds and are responsible for their individual sound design.
Fundamental knowledge about electronic sound generation is imparted in the “hands-on” process. Ten modular synthesizer systems are designed in such a way that the different configurations create an ensemble with different musical voices. The resulting sounds are the basis for a joint composition, which is recorded with a graphic notation and then played live.
Working with an analog modular synthesizer not only conveys the emergence of electronic music, but is also an important basis for digital electronic music on the computer.

The musician and sound artist Gammon has been active for many years in the field of music and art mediation with various workshop formats. In 2013 he was awarded the international music mediation prize “Junge Ohren” and won the German competition “Kinder zum Olymp”. For more than a decade, he worked successfully with the Thilges3 collective on an international level. The trio used almost exclusively Doepfer‘s Modular Synthesizer for their installative performance formats.

Two weeks ago No Bounds Festival took place in Sheffield and offered a three-day programme of art, music, discussion and workshops united by an experimental nature. The festival did not spare on artistic diversity and locations and was well received by the audience. It involved the Hope Works club, that can be considered as one of the best clubs in the country. No Bounds took place all across the city and gave a stage to artists from all over the world, covering several musical genres ranging from dark techno and electro to cutting-edge experimental music.

From our point of view, Saturday was particularly interesting. At 4pm Jessica Kert from SchneidersLaden and Konstantin Gervis (TipTop Audio) gave a workshop on modular synthesizers.

The workshop was very well attended – most of the participants stayed for 2.30 hrs and listened attentively to Jessicas and Konstantins presentation. The audience was very mixed and excitingly included musicians who had played at the festival and even long time customers of SchneiderLaden. Everyone was extremely hungry for knowledge, incredibly interested and extremely gracious. This also applies to the organizers, who presented themselves very professionally. Thanks you for organizing No Bounds and including the modular synth workshop!

Here are some visual impressions. Thank you to No Bounds festival for the pictures!

Freqs of Nature 2017 review – a modular playground

Full (modular) House at Freqs of Nature!

The Freqs of Nature Festival has been around for quite some time now but only recently expanded the musical spectrum. The festival concentrated on mostly Psy Trance music until last year. Now there is almost any genre of electronic music present leaving you spoilt for choice, wich is a very good thing. As a guest of Freqs of Nature you will always be able to find the perfect musical match for your current mood. From smooth and relaxed Ambient or Dub music to tripping and driving DnB, Breakcore, Techno and – of cause – Psy Trance. You are even able to find all kinds of experimental electronic music, numerous workshops and multiple art galleries with a huge variety of art through out the festival. From a gallery featuring mind-tickling artworks of artists from all around the globe, to street-art and live painting performances there is a lot to discover at Freqs of Nature. The audience is openminded and interested in discovering new way of expression and sounds and is willing to walk the adventurous routes.

This is the point where it gets interesting – last year there was already some modular action visible at the festival. This year this part of the festival was generously expanded by the organizers, by dedicating a special area to modular synths.

Freqs_festival_impressions_patrick_2The Modular House was a … well a house, dedicated to the experimental playground – the modular synthesizer. We were very excited when we discovered this. We (=Patrick Detampel) set up different modular systems and held workshop after workshop. The flow of interested people never really stoped, there were always people around, playing an instrument they might not know existed before entering the Modular House. The interest was so big that Patrick Detampel, our product specialist and well known modular expert, decided to set up 1-hour beginner workshops, Q&A times and open jam sessions. Additionally the Bastl Instruments Crew offered a beginners soldering workshop with their DIY kits.

Freqs_festival_impressions_patrick_3

The synths!

We brought a lot of gear, some of it can be found in the pictures, but here is a more detailed list:

Freqs_festival_impressions

The sound was good!

Surprisingly there was a little Function One sound system setup in the modular house so you really were able to hear what the machines are capable of. But the sound of modular synthesizers was not only present in the modular house. More and more live acts play their shows with modulars and the artists at Freqs of Nature where no exception. The organizers took good care of the sound quality and a constant flow of music – with shows 24 hours a day the party never stopped … until Tuesday morning!

The trip to Freqs of Nature was great and we want to thank the organizers for their support of modular music and making our stay as comfortable as possible … In the end it is a music festival, it is loud, dirty and the best thing you can do in German summer!

We will be back! Make sure you will be there too. Next years edition will happen from 04-09 July 2018.

To get some more visual impressions of the festival make sure to check out the impressive picture gallery HERE.

Gammons modular workshop for children at SUPERBOOTH17

More of our regularly unregular video releases of Workshops and Performances from SUPERBOOTH, SchneidersLaden and SchneidersBuero. HerrSchneider invited Gammon to his new video studio in Berlin Kreuzberg, where the two talked about the ideas behind the Workshops Gammon held during SUPERBOOTH17.

These workshops were specifically designed for children. The participants were students from schools in Berlin Mitte and Neukölln. With 10 individually configured modular synthesizers the group was able to create different musical voices to interact and complement each other in a unique composition that can be heard in one of the following videos. Besides some technical aspects of the machines the children were working with, there was a strong focus on the parallels to natural sounding objects. These are a part of the wide range of sonic opportunities that can be found on modular synthesizers.

Gammon is planing to do a similar workshop in November, this time a 3-day workshop at DEFINE Festival in Sønderborg, Denmark. The concept for this workshop is to develop a Modular Synthesizer Ensemble with the participants and to be able to play a concert on the last day of the festival.

P-A-T-C-H-I-N-G! a workshop with jessica / July 27th/6pm

jessy 2Dear modular synthesizer enthusiasts!  July 27th, 6pm, our Jessica is inviting everybody for a patch session in our beloved and once again rearranged showroom!

Some prerequisite knowledge about modular synths surely will help. But even more this event is not about nerdy tech talk – it will be a patch session together with and for you. About he immediate fun and magic of these sometimes mysterious blinking and always sound spitting machines.

Jessica will show you various types of synthesis, like subtractive, granular and frequency modulation, several ways of programming rhythms with sequencers and clock dividers, playing sequencers and various ways of composing music on a Modular Synthesizer and more!

Starts at 6pm / Kotti above REWE (ring bell: schneidersladen)

Video of Surgeon Workshop at SchneidersLaden

Herr Schneider is back with something new. During the next weeks there will be different releases of videos about workshops and performances from SUPERBOOTH17 and SchneidersLaden. Especially the workshop videos represent recent developments in the culture of Berlin’s electronic music scene.

This scene and especially the eurorack community have proved to have a very supportive and vital culture. This can be seen in the success of events like SUPERBOOTH Berlin, Maker Fair Berlin or Krake Festival. People tend to share ideas, discoveries and knowledge with each other to push the boundaries of what is possible. As a big part of this culture, workshops are the perfect opportunity for meeting each other and learning from each other. SchneidersLaden offers these Workshops for some time now and was able to present some big names as hosts. One of the recent Special Workshops was hosted by techno artist Surgeon and the video will be online tonight at 9 pm CET, it will be followed by the first video from SUPERBOOTH17 next week! Keep your eyes on Stromkult.com or follow the link at the bottom of this page.

Surgeon will be talking about his work with the Eurorack Modular System, with which he has been known to perform in clubs around the world. Respected as one of the most exciting live acts around, Surgeon is sure to have a wealth of knowledge about using the modular. He explains how his personal modular synthesizer story began in SchneidersLaden and how it developed since then.

IN DIALOGUE WITH MODULAR –(SOLO)  IMPROVISATIONAL STRATEGIES with Eurorack

Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is a master when it comes to exploring the possibilities that lie within modular synths-

As a solo artist or in countless collaborations. Most often he engages in hypnotic drone like textures, also integrating his voice.

For this event we present you with the opportunity to experience Rob Lowe diving into the depths of a patch and also having the possibility to engage in a fruitful discussion – (meanwhile/and/or afterwards.)

As you know every eurorack system is unique and everybody will develop a unique approach to patching. This event is about sharing our ideas, impressions, thoughts on modular music and opinions on favorite modules.

Workshop July 21st: Ornaments & Crime (or: how to design a module)

new

It’s about time to reveal the topic for our special workshop and special guest: We are going to have a close look at the ornaments and crime module. Mainly the work of three people who met through muffwiggler, O&C is a prime example of what the Eurorack DIY community is capable of.

O&C is filling a gap: it is the only 16bit accurate microtonal quantizer. A quad one!! And much more… As it is based on Teensy many other applications are also possible: quadrature wavetable LFO, shift register, Euclidean rhythm generator, envelope generator…

Have a look at it:https://github.com/mxmxmx/O_C

We are going to discuss the design history, the programming, its functionality. The developer Max Stadler (mxmxmx on mw) will be present and together we are happy to answer all your questions.

Please register: write Thomas tc@schneidersladen.de for confirmation.

Workshop takes place on july 21st at 6pm in our showroom (Kotti above Kaisers)!

See you. The Schneidersladen showroom team

Solder workshop

To solder yourself a little synth may be an interesting experience for electronic musicians: Leaf Audio will realize another of their DIY workshops where you can learn such inside the KRAKE festival on the afternoon of July, 30st – Saturday. To participate please register asap via this side: If I got it right, you just go there to solder it together yourselves and sooner or later you will get it done and have your first own little synth – handmade, selfmade and to go.
