The Freqs of Nature Festival has been around for quite some time now but only recently expanded the musical spectrum. The festival concentrated on mostly Psy Trance music until last year. Now there is almost any genre of electronic music present leaving you spoilt for choice, wich is a very good thing. As a guest of Freqs of Nature you will always be able to find the perfect musical match for your current mood. From smooth and relaxed Ambient or Dub music to tripping and driving DnB, Breakcore, Techno and – of cause – Psy Trance. You are even able to find all kinds of experimental electronic music, numerous workshops and multiple art galleries with a huge variety of art through out the festival. From a gallery featuring mind-tickling artworks of artists from all around the globe, to street-art and live painting performances there is a lot to discover at Freqs of Nature. The audience is openminded and interested in discovering new way of expression and sounds and is willing to walk the adventurous routes.
This is the point where it gets interesting – last year there was already some modular action visible at the festival. This year this part of the festival was generously expanded by the organizers, by dedicating a special area to modular synths.
The Modular House was a … well a house, dedicated to the experimental playground – the modular synthesizer. We were very excited when we discovered this. We (=Patrick Detampel) set up different modular systems and held workshop after workshop. The flow of interested people never really stoped, there were always people around, playing an instrument they might not know existed before entering the Modular House. The interest was so big that Patrick Detampel, our product specialist and well known modular expert, decided to set up 1-hour beginner workshops, Q&A times and open jam sessions. Additionally the Bastl Instruments Crew offered a beginners soldering workshop with their DIY kits.
The synths!
We brought a lot of gear, some of it can be found in the pictures, but here is a more detailed list:
Vermona modules in a Vermona case, mostly for drum purposes, modulation and filtering.
To keep the machines in sync we used the mighty E-RM Multiclock.
The sound was good!
Surprisingly there was a little Function One sound system setup in the modular house so you really were able to hear what the machines are capable of. But the sound of modular synthesizers was not only present in the modular house. More and more live acts play their shows with modulars and the artists at Freqs of Nature where no exception. The organizers took good care of the sound quality and a constant flow of music – with shows 24 hours a day the party never stopped … until Tuesday morning!
The trip to Freqs of Nature was great and we want to thank the organizers for their support of modular music and making our stay as comfortable as possible … In the end it is a music festival, it is loud, dirty and the best thing you can do in German summer!
We will be back! Make sure you will be there too. Next years edition will happen from 04-09 July 2018.
To get some more visual impressions of the festival make sure to check out the impressive picture gallery HERE.
More of our regularly unregular video releases of Workshops and Performances from SUPERBOOTH, SchneidersLaden and SchneidersBuero. HerrSchneider invited Gammon to his new video studio in Berlin Kreuzberg, where the two talked about the ideas behind the Workshops Gammon held during SUPERBOOTH17.
These workshops were specifically designed for children. The participants were students from schools in Berlin Mitte and Neukölln. With 10 individually configured modular synthesizers the group was able to create different musical voices to interact and complement each other in a unique composition that can be heard in one of the following videos. Besides some technical aspects of the machines the children were working with, there was a strong focus on the parallels to natural sounding objects. These are a part of the wide range of sonic opportunities that can be found on modular synthesizers.
Gammon is planing to do a similar workshop in November, this time a 3-day workshop at DEFINE Festival in Sønderborg, Denmark. The concept for this workshop is to develop a Modular Synthesizer Ensemble with the participants and to be able to play a concert on the last day of the festival.
Dear modular synthesizer enthusiasts! July 27th, 6pm, our Jessica is inviting everybody for a patch session in our beloved and once again rearranged showroom!
Some prerequisite knowledge about modular synths surely will help. But even more this event is not about nerdy tech talk – it will be a patch session together with and for you. About he immediate fun and magic of these sometimes mysterious blinking and always sound spitting machines.
Jessica will show you various types of synthesis, like subtractive, granular and frequency modulation, several ways of programming rhythms with sequencers and clock dividers, playing sequencers and various ways of composing music on a Modular Synthesizer and more!
Starts at 6pm / Kotti above REWE (ring bell: schneidersladen)
Workshop is limited to 15 participants, so.. >>> Please write for confirmation Jessi : jk@schneidersladen.de directly now !!! <<<

Herr Schneider is back with something new. During the next weeks there will be different releases of videos about workshops and performances from SUPERBOOTH17 and SchneidersLaden. Especially the workshop videos represent recent developments in the culture of Berlin’s electronic music scene.
This scene and especially the eurorack community have proved to have a very supportive and vital culture. This can be seen in the success of events like SUPERBOOTH Berlin, Maker Fair Berlin or Krake Festival. People tend to share ideas, discoveries and knowledge with each other to push the boundaries of what is possible. As a big part of this culture, workshops are the perfect opportunity for meeting each other and learning from each other. SchneidersLaden offers these Workshops for some time now and was able to present some big names as hosts. One of the recent Special Workshops was hosted by techno artist Surgeon and the video will be online tonight at 9 pm CET, it will be followed by the first video from SUPERBOOTH17 next week! Keep your eyes on Stromkult.com or follow the link at the bottom of this page.
Surgeon will be talking about his work with the Eurorack Modular System, with which he has been known to perform in clubs around the world. Respected as one of the most exciting live acts around, Surgeon is sure to have a wealth of knowledge about using the modular. He explains how his personal modular synthesizer story began in SchneidersLaden and how it developed since then.
Additional to the Special Workshops at SchneidersLaden, there are Beginner and Advanced Workshops, both are held on a regular basis. Please go to the Event Calender for the latest dates.

Talk / Concert / Workshop with Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe:
IN DIALOGUE WITH MODULAR –(SOLO) IMPROVISATIONAL STRATEGIES with Eurorack
Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is a master when it comes to exploring the possibilities that lie within modular synths-
As a solo artist or in countless collaborations. Most often he engages in hypnotic drone like textures, also integrating his voice.
As a regular guest to our showroom whenever he is in Berlin, he is also of invaluable help when it comes to novel patching techniques and hidden aspects of modules.
For this event we present you with the opportunity to experience Rob Lowe diving into the depths of a patch and also having the possibility to engage in a fruitful discussion – (meanwhile/and/or afterwards.)
As you know every eurorack system is unique and everybody will develop a unique approach to patching. This event is about sharing our ideas, impressions, thoughts on modular music and opinions on favorite modules.
Skinnerbox will play a so called Gesprächskonzert on SUPERBOOTH17-Saturday afternoon 5pm in the theatre hall for endorphin.es. Probably Skinnerbox will perform on one of their first complete shuttles, now – hereyou can find their last years details.
.. btw. 13 DIY-Workshops will be held during superbooth with limited places available (now online). Soldering icons and everything else will be there, you just need to book your place now and arrive in time, there is plenty of time left for the rest of the show if you will be in town for more than one day (!). Look here.
Come over on Thursday, November 10th for a special introduction to modular workshop with our friends Touellskouarn! Our goal is to help you get familiarized with the modular so that you can confidently make your first patch! This time around you will also have the opportunity to learn directly from Gaël of Touellskouarn how to add life and color to this first patch using feedback and fuzz with the likes of the Strakal Brulu and Sonveskan modules.
Although we are nerds we won’t get too technical. Along the way we will show you basic patch techniques as well as talking about how one can start applying them to make music. Starts at 6pm / At our showroom / Kotti above Kaisers (ring bell: schneidersladen) / The workshop is limited to 12 participants:

After his gig in Berlin Jean-Michel Jarre visited our showoroom in SchneidersLaden and met Boris Blank from the Band Yello here. Boris was looking for some modulars picking up a black Doepfer System and the TomOberheim Twovoice Synth for his shows in Berlins Kraftwerk.
wow – 2016 is almost over and many(many!) new manufacturers appeared on the scene; a vivid live scene gets us excited, a larger market is developing… an excellent time to talk about the present and the future of eurorack .. about you and us?
.. as an open discussion on ongoing and coming developments, good and bad ones, the ones we wish for and those we already wish they never happened?
Just drop us a line per mail so we know how many of you are coming. Write to Thomas : tc@schneidersladen.de and join: Thursday Oct 27th / 6pm in Schneidersladen showroom. really looking forward seeing you!
SUPERBOOTH17 will happen in April directly after Easter again. This time we will celebrate the FEZ Berlin, a building made for kids and the youth with many wonderful functional rooms, located in a great family park not far from last year’s venue. It was built in 1979 by the GDR and is in perfect condition. Again you can start the trip with a boat shuttle from “Jannowitzbrücke” in the morning or (new!) you get there with S-Bahn (suburban train) all day long.
Potential exhibitors will have an invitation this weekend, ticket sales will start in November. A new website has been released now.
This month’s Beginners Workshop is a special edition! Besides introducing you to the basics of patching a modular synth we are also joined by the lovely people of LIVESTOCKELECTRONICS, a new manufacturer from the Netherlands we are sure you will hear from in the future.
They will bring a bunch of their new modules – among these a superinteresting sequencer called shepard, a performance router / mixer called maze and some ultra-useful utilities.
Although we are all nerds here we won’t get too technical. Along the way we will show you basic patch techniques as well as tell you some anecdotes about the history of (modular) synths plus some insights into the module manufacturing business!
Workshop starts 6pm | In our showroom at Kotti above Kaiser’s supermarket (ring at: schneidersladen) | The workshop is limited to 15 participants. Please register under tc@schneidersladen.de (Thomas)

This weekend the Krake Festival with lots of electronic live -acts & perfomances is in Berlin. Here and there you ll see some people of our shop as well joining a 12 hour Jam. On Saturday ,there will be a workshop zone held by Patrick D. with eurorack modulars during the LABEL BOUTIQUE from 2pm til 9pm.
It’s about time to reveal the topic for our special workshop and special guest: We are going to have a close look at the ornaments and crime module. Mainly the work of three people who met through muffwiggler, O&C is a prime example of what the Eurorack DIY community is capable of.
O&C is filling a gap: it is the only 16bit accurate microtonal quantizer. A quad one!! And much more… As it is based on Teensy many other applications are also possible: quadrature wavetable LFO, shift register, Euclidean rhythm generator, envelope generator…
We are going to discuss the design history, the programming, its functionality. The developer Max Stadler (mxmxmx on mw) will be present and together we are happy to answer all your questions.
To solder yourself a little synth may be an interesting experience for electronic musicians: Leaf Audio will realize another of their DIY workshops where you can learn such inside the KRAKE festival on the afternoon of July, 30st – Saturday. To participate please register asap via this side: If I got it right, you just go there to solder it together yourselves and sooner or later you will get it done and have your first own little synth – handmade, selfmade and to go.
On Thursday 21st of July we continue our ongoing “how do you do that?”-workshop&discussion series at our beloved showroom. As usual we will invite a special guest that will give us closeup insights in his approach to modular synthesis (to be revealed very soon). Until that:
Registration is opened and required, the workshop is limited to 15 people.

This massive stack of boxes in the picture is the long-awaited next delivery of Oberheim Two Voice Pro synthesizers which we are very much loking forward to receive in the next couple of days. Each of these babies has been hand-calibrated by Mr. Tom Oberheim himself.
Workshop: Ipad and your modular (feat. The nice people of MODSTEP and ZMORS) / feb25th.6pm.
Dear modularists,
After our workshop last month where we dealt with cleverly integrating a modular synth in a DAW environment, this month we ll have a look at what the world of Apps is offering and how we can use these with a modular synth, where you ll also have a chance to talk to developers.
Touch devices were rather science fiction like 10 years ago and are now ubiquituous. Out of the zillion apps avaibale we chose two of which we think that they represent the most interesting when it comes to our concerns.
ZMORS is a modular synth in the vein of the legendary nord modular and offers plenty of connectivity to the outside world. Via expert sleepers ES-3 you can have a whole suite of modulators, oscs, lfos avaible to interact with your system.
While MODSTEP is the hardwaresequencer we always dreamed of. Be it through expert sleepers or a MIDI to CV module. We will have a look on how the functionality of MODSTEP can have an impact on your system.
Both the developers Benjamin Weiss(MODSTEP) and Sven Braun (ZMORS) will be present and will happily answer all your questions!
Workshop is feb 25th at 6pm in our showroom (kotti above Kaisers)
Yo, time for an update regarding products which have been out of stock for a while or are so popular that they sold out quickly. Most products have been completely reserved for a longer time but just to let you know^^
Cwejman:
Good news: The MX-4S, BLD, FSH-1 and DMF-2 just were delivered today.
Bad News: Unfortunately Cwejman had to rise prices due to the higher US-Dollar exchange rate making electronic components pricey.
Then we also received goods from Mannequins and Grendel‘s Drone Commander 2 Eurorack module plus a few expanders – all of these are available from stock
NAMM showed that there are still manufacturers worth having in our product range.
Rossum Electro-Music was on the bucket list instantly and the Evolution filter can already be ordered from us, the other modules will follow in spring.
We have been asked often if we will offer products from Bastl Instruments at SchneidersLaden – now we are happy to say YES. We are busy adding their gear to our webshop – if you need something different we haven’t in the shop yet just let us know.
In WMD’s big collective booth a lot of manufacturers were displaying a massive amount of gear so you had to look closely to get all news. Here is a mixed overwiev of things we discovered.
Soulsby Synths presented the Oscitron, a voltage controllable Eurorack version of their 8-Bit synthesizer Atmegatron. It features more wavetables, allows for recording your own wavetables and it has 128 samples resolution instead of 32. Price will be 299€ and release is in April ’16.
Synthrotek’s new MIDI/CV interface offers something unique: it can be used in opposite direction, too so you can use it as a Clock-to-MIDI/USB interface. Imagine synchronizing your DAW to your modular’s clock – exactly this is possible! Cost is $199 and it seems to be available now
An expander will add arpeggiator functionality to the MIDI/CV interface for $150.
The Expressor module is a dual foot controller with a twist: each of the two channels having a pedal-controlled VCA allows for direct volume control by foot. Adjustments to the CV characteristic can be made as well.
Pittsburgh Modular have a new line of rather heavy yet really beautiful wooden flightcase enclosures and two modules from the new Lifeforms line:
The sv-1 is a new synth voice, bigger and more flexible than the Synthblock modules from the past. $699.
The kb-1 will be really interesting for users who like to have a touch plate keyboard but dislike the size and/or price of the existing ones. This one will cost $499, it is pressure sensitive, has an arpeggiator, one octave, four adjustable preset plates and two manual trigger generator plates.
No picture of Harvestman here but we were told his killer über-sequencer Stilton Hammer II will be available late February.
Make Noise leavin’ the past and are ready for the future .
Rob demonstrates for us the new Make Noise desktop synth O-COAST
A little well designed analog stand alone semi-modular unit, merging west- and east-coast philosophies into a powerful synth with unusual sounds and routing possibilities and an incredible warm low Bass. No filter needed – a harmonic generator and a wave multiplier are used to shape the sound. It should be ready in ~3 months for less than $500.
On the eurorack side they anounced their allready orderable modul TEMPI – a 6-channel, polyphonic time-shifting clock module. It provides an intuitive method for creation and recall of complex clocking arrangements within a modular synthesizer system. Using HUMAN and/ or MACHINE programming you could re-create most classic Clock Divider and Multiplier arrangements and then continue on to create new ones. Store up to 64 for later recall and Select them using control signals from within your system or the Select Bus.The price will be 269 $.
And we are glad to see them at Superbooth in berlin end of March.
STROMKULT is our platform for updates and news on SCHNEIDERSLADEN and SUPERBOOTH, selected electronic musical instruments and events related to modular synthesizers, sequencers, competent drum machines, analog modular systems, midi tools, controllers, converters and related products of all kinds.
