On November 22nd, Sacha Ketterlin from the Higher Resonance label will show what it can be like to massage your brain with a modular synthesizer consisting mainly of Macbeth Series X modules (see picture below) – an atmospheric and intense ambient performance is to be expected.
Sacha Ketterlin has been building his instrument for many years. His focus is on the careful compilation of modules for the perfect analog sound and to make as few trade-offs as possible in order to bring it to the stage. Especially during his ambient performances you can really feel the quality of the sounds, here no sacrifices are made. Chords don’t come from samplers or digital modules, but from precisely tuned Macbeth oscillators – you can hear the difference.
November 22nd – starting at 7:30pm (as always) right after the regular Beginner Workshop.
The performance is limited to 20 persons, so… >>> Please write Timm for confirmation: Participation is free-of-charge as always!

On November 15th Tom Körting shows what can be done with the fine modules made by Vermona. After having some more performance oriented Thursday during the last weeks, this workshop will be a bit more technical an in-depth. As a developer and manufacturer of synthesizers and effects units Vermona has shown for years already that they can offer uncompromisingly high quality, innovative concepts in their developments again and again. As a proof – have a look at the new fourMative Contour, an ultra-flexible envelope modulation generator that has just been released. But also classics like the fourMulator still manage to tickle creative impulses. Tobi Neumenann also reported on this at his workshop in SchneidersLaden. For this workshop expect some in-depth look at the Vermona modules and musical examples of what can be done with them.
NOVEMBER 15th // 7:30pm // SchneidersLaden
And if you are only about to start your modular journey or just want to know what the hell I am talking about -> join our Modular Synthesizer Beginner Workshops! -> Every Thursday 6pm at SchneidersLaden!

In November SchneidersLaden will continue with the last Workshopseries for this year – and we will start with a real highlight! A few days after her live performance at Berghain, Lady Starlight will open the next workshop series at SchneidersLaden. As a long-time friend and customer, Lady Starlight was already invited by SchneidersLaden to play at Berlin Atonal, at the Modular Schaltzentrale, this year. Together with Mark Verbos she presented 3 hours of uncompromising and improvised modular techno. So expect some excellent, raw, straightforward music made with modular machines and get some insights into Lady Starlights career and work – on November 8th – starting at 7:30pm (as always) right after the regular Beginner Workshop.

On October 18th Schneidersladen welcomes XAOC Devices from Poland as our guests. They will be showing some of their latest developments and explain the highly complex and powerful Zadar – an ultra flexible envelope generator and so much more. It is equipped with an OLED screen and almost endless options to create up to four extremely precise and complex envelopes. Or take a look at the “Binary Conversion Komputor” called Drezno. This unique module consists of AD/DA converters that let you extract gates from audio signals and audio signals from gates – which is only a very condensed description of what this module is capable of. XAOC Devices often brings something new to the table and the Drezno is no exception, it even features an expander called Lipsk. The expander lets you invert single bits in the stream of data produced by Drezno.
Also: Odessa! The new additive oscillator is not even available yet – in this workshop you’ll get the chance to learn more about it! Odessa brings a lot of tonal variety to the table, it might be the most elaborate implementation of additive synthesis in eurorack right now.
As you can see XAOC Devices really goes one step further with their modules and you get the chance to talk to the makers themselves and to see the modules in action in a small performance part of the workshop. Don’t miss the chance to take part in the upcoming workshop with one of the most innovative eurorack manufacturers these days. Thursday – 18th of October – @SchneidersLaden – start: 7:30pm!
The performance is limited to 20 persons, so… >>> Please write Timm for confirmation: Participation is free-of-charge as always!

On the 4th of October (7:30pm) we have TouellSkouarn as our guest. The company that develops and manufactures eurorack modules was founded in 2010 by Gaël Loison, musician (Dale Cooper Quartet, Noroeste, Maman Küsters…) and graphic designer (Ultra Rapide Canari). He dedicated his brand to the design, manufacturing and sale of analog electronic musical instruments. The brand has distinguished itself internationally by its special design, its sound, the use of Breton language and creamy distortions. The very good reputation of TouellSkouarn was enhanced by the use of TouellSkouarn products by great musicians (Depeche Mode, Yann Tiersen, Gareth Jones, Blawan, Celldweller…). For the event at SchneidersLaden Gaël will play a concert with his modular synthesizer and an Octatrack, before giving us an insight into his company and the ideas behind his modules.

Theremin Workshop at SchneidersLaden with Carolina Eyck – one of the most prominent theremin players worldwide! She developed a special playing technique that leads to extraordinary results. In 2006, Carolina published the first extensive theremin method book entitled “The Art of Playing the Theremin”, available in german and english. The 8-finger-technique described in this book can be learned or witnessed in lectures, workshops, concerts and performances by Carolina Eyck all over Europe. In September you have the chance to be part of a special Theremin Workshop at SchneidersLaden by Carolina Eyck: September 6th at 7:30pm.
Carolina will bring her very rare Pro version of the Moog Etherwave Theremin. This model has been discontinued several years ago. It is considered to be the most professional and serious Theremin model Moog ever made. Due to the better scaling of the pitch field it is more suitable for professional Theremin playing. The standard Moog Etherwave Theremins do not feature this better scaled pitch field. But there is a way to improve the playability of the standard Moog Theremin (Plus) by adding a modification that has been developed by Thierry Frenkel. This modification is available from a shop in The Hague. There will be a Moog Etherwave Plus with this modification to try out at the workshop!
If you have been to SUPERBOOTH18 you might have seen Carolina playing a concert on the Seaside-Stage! The video of this concert can soon be found on HerrSchneiders Vimeo channel. In the meantime there is this short conversation between HerrSchneider and Carolina Eyck before SUPERBOOTH18.
Summary: Theremin Workshop with Carolina Eyck – September 6th, 7:30pm @SchneidersLaden

For three days, the Elektronauten Festival in the Elbphilharmonie is all about electronically produced music – synthesizers, vocoders, loop music, oscillators and much more. There are concerts, talks and lots of workshops to participate. SchneidersLaden will be there too!
The hands-on lecture by Berlin sound artist Thomas Kircher is just the right thing for those who are still unfamiliar with these terms. Thomas Kircher is a student of “Sound Studies and Sonic Arts” and works in the legendary Berlin synthesizer shop SchneidersLaden. In five 90-minute lectures he explains the basics of synthesizer music, uncomplicated and without becoming too technical. In his lecture he illustrates how to program, control, modulate, route and mix voltages with patch cables – in short, how a sound is created on a synthesizer. He also takes a look at the history of electronic music, the philosophy of the developers of then and now and reports first-hand on the dynamics and development of the scene in recent years.
The Modular Synthesizer Ensemble by Gammon will also be present at Elektronauten Festival. The Modular Synthesizer Ensemble provides 12 synthesizers to create sounds, melodies and noises and write whole compositions. Guided by Gammon, a musician and music mediator who has been working with synthesizers since the 1990s, the participants in this one-day workshop gain a deep insight into working with modular synthesizers – experimenting, improvising and developing their own composition.
Here is a video of Gammons project at SUPERBOOTH18 where the participants were school children.
You will also be able to find the Modular Carousel there and learn how to patch a modular synthesizer – the avant-garde instrument in electronic music production.

In December we had very special guests at Schneidersladen, WhoMadeWho and DIFFUS Magazin. They recorded an interview about their new album that will be released on 19th of January. Jeppe, Tomas and Tomas took the chance and turned the showroom into a stage and the interview turned into an improvised jam session for some time. It was a very welcome visit and we want to thank everyone involved.
Every second and fourth Thursday there is a workshop at Schneidersladen. Hundreds of modular beginners and experts take part in the DON’T PANIC (beginner) and P-A-T-C-H-I-N-G (advanced) workshops each year. This year some of the P-A-T-C-H-I-N-G workshops were hosted by special guests like Richard Devine and Surachai, Walker Farrell and Tobi Neumann. These spechial workshops were recorded and edited and can be found here.
In 2018 Schniedersladen wll continue to help newbies to get into eurorack and experts to improve their knowledge. On December 14th 2017, the last workshop of this year, was hosted by Schneidersladen employee Miquel (find some picures below the video). In January we will start again with new workshops of all kinds and throughout the year more workshops with special guests will be recorded.
If you havn’t already, take a look at the previous recordings, a perfect thing for those cosy holidays!
Here is th latest of our special workshops. Follow the LINK for the others and keep aneye on the Event Calendar for workshop announcements and other synthesizer related events.
In November Tobi Neumann and Fadi turned Schneidersladen showroom into a (private) lesson on how to use a modular synthesizer not only as inspirational or improvisational tool but as an instrument that seamlessly integrates within a professional studio environment and workflow. Tobi Neumann’s career spans 2 decades as DJ and producer for labels like Cocoon, Playhouse and artists like Miss Kittin, Chicks on Speed and 2Raumwohnung. He is also what one could call an early adaptor of Eurorack and a longtime and cherished customer of our little store. Together with Fadi he forms a highly productive team. Their homebase is Apollo Studio Berlin which is centered around a modular system. With years of experience the two will provide insights into working with ModularSynths.
Enjoy this video of a special workshop at Schneidersladen showroom.
December 14th, 6pm, we’re holding a workshop for modular beginners in our beloved and once again rearranged SchneidersLaden showroom.
Our goal is that you can confidently make your own first patch afterwards and have a good time. And also meet likeminded people! Although we are nerds we won’t get too technical. Along the way we will show you basic patch techniques, the workings of our showroom, as well as tell you some stories about the history of (modular) synths and the ever evolving Eurocrack scene.
Starts at 6pm / Kotti above REWE (use the door at REWE and knock LOUD at or metal door)
Workshop is limited to 12 participants, so… >>> Please write Thomas for confirmation:
Yesterday we had a nice visit from WhoMadeWho and DIFFUS Magazin, they shot an interview in SchneidersLaden showroom. Jeppe, Tomas and Tomas took the chance and turned the showroom into a stage and the interview turned into an improvised jam session for some time. It was a very welcome visit and we are looking forward to the video on diffusmag.de.
Our dear friend Gammon has had a very busy November. In the coming weeks we will be covering his different projects with the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble at Define festival (Denmark), concert at Grätzel Galerie (Vienna) and many more. Starting with the „Tage zeitgemäßer Musik” (days of contemporary music) at Bludenz. This festival has been founded 29 years ago. Gammon started his Modular Synthesizer Ensemble seminars at SUPERBOOTH17 and you can have a short insight into this here.
To Bludenz Gammon brought a dozen modular synthesizers for the festival of contempory music. Five pupils from Bludenz took part in a three day seminar exploring different modular synthesizers and composing and rehearsing for a concert. They all attend the music section of the high school in Bludenz and learn one instrument each, but have never been using a synthesizer. For them it was the first contact with this electronic musical instrument. Contemporay music is often not recognised by young people. They tend not to realize how wide the field of music can be and that it does not always need rythms and melodies. Therefor the Tage zeitgemäßer Musik at Bludenz are an important and very welcome institution for cultural education. The festival set a focus on cultural education of young people with the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble by Gammon.
Because this project is about cultural and not technical education the creative and musical work started right after a brief introduction into the basic functional principles of modular synthesizers. Very quickly the group was able to develop and create different musical voices to interact and complement each other in a unique composition. All participants had different modular systems with different sonic qualities and potentials. These different “voices” were the technical basis for the ensemble. With a very basic introduction to the wide field of modular synthesis the participants were able to work out specific sounds and express themselfs. One piece at a time was worked out. Starting with individual sounds that were then arranged in structures to form a performance or concert in the end. These young people managed to get a good sens for each other and the music and formed a convincing group of musicians – an ensemble.
Gammon, who had already offered this method in Berlin and Denmark, was very pleased with the athmosphere and outcome of this seminar:”The youngsters got involved and played very well. My main goal is making music together. The project gave us all a lot of pleasure, and the audience was impressed by what can be achieved in three days.” And the visebilety in the community was a central issue. Therefor the venue was chosen to be in the middle of the city, in a former shoe store.
The next three days will be exciting for those who like to witness modular synthesizers being used in front of an audience. The modular journey starts tomorrow 6pm at Schneidersladen where Tobi Neumann and Fadi from Apollo Studio Berlin will give some insights into their work as professional producers. They will talk about their use of the modular in a studio environment and reveal some of their special tricks to the audience. If you want to participate you can find more info on how to register to this free workshop here. Don’t miss this special evening.
On Friday the #24th edition of Basic Electricity will take place in Berlin. This time the impressive König Otto in Neukölln will be the location for the longest running modular event of the German capital. The evening is titled “The Sense of Sound” where Thomas Ankersmit and others will be pushing the limits of sound! The doors open at 8pm and music starts at 9pm – tickets 10€. More info here.
On Saturday one is really spoilt for choice … There is the fantastic Colin Benders playing live at Ben Klocks Photon party at Berghain and there is the seven (!) hour modular liveset of Berlins Modular Gang at Oscillate at //about blank. Good news is: if you can’t make it to //about blank, or not for all seven hours – Cashmere radio will be broadcasting live, all night long! But don’t get this wrong – go there in person. The Oscillate partys are really good. In case you prefer going to Berghain, be prepared for a Colin Benders modular live performance that is more techno than what you might have heard from him in the past. This is going to be the first Photon party at Berghain and should be a great night! Wherever you decide to go – have fun and relax – the next modular synthesizer is not far away!
The modular synthesizer workshop at We Make Waves, Berlin-based festival and conference made for women, trans and non-binary people was very well attended and all participants were incredibly eager to learn. Many of them were long-time musicians – from singers to techno producers. They were very interested and took an active part in the workshop, so many questions were asked and answered. In the beginning Jessica and Jackie from SchneidersLaden introduced themselves and talked a bit about their passion for modular and their general background. Afterwards all participants were asked to come close to the modular to learn something about some of the core modules of the modular synthesizer. Afterwards there was an overview about the integration and connection of the synthesizer with an Acidlab Miami drum machine and a mixing desk. From there on it was all about patching. Everyone was invited to contribute to the patch and therefor was a part of the music that was created.
The workshop lasted for 2 hours – the last 30 minutes were used to hand over the modular systems and the Acidlab Miami to the participants. They were able to put down a pretty decent and surprisingly interesting acid techno jam.
The workshop was a good opportunity to bring people into contact with modular synthesizers, that otherwise maybe wouldn’t have taken the step. Therefor there will be more of these workshops, for example at SchneidersLaden showroom and SUPERBOOTH18 in the future.
Watch the Event Calendar for more modular synthesizer related events.
Richard Devine and Surachai visited the showroom at SchneidersLaden the day after their concert at Berghain. The best thing about it is that they have made a whole workshop out of it. Richard Devine showed his live rig and explained his unmistakable approach of playing a eurorack system. He is one ofthe most important modular experts and a key figure to the eurorack scene. Within our scene we all have different approaches to patching and our own uniquely assembled systems. During this workshop we shared patch-ideas and argued about favourite modules. Richard talked about his beginnings with creating music and using synthesizers and how he puts his musical ideas into practice today.
If you have missed part one of this workshop watch it here.
The second part begins with a performance similar to the performance at Berghain the night before. Then Richard is answering questions by the audience. Themes like special firmwares and patch methods come up that make his modular Synthesizer this special alien insectoid machine.
Hello Patch-People, Synthesizer-Enthusiasts, Newbies and Hardcore Modular-Addicts!
Next week there will be another of our very special workshops. We are very honored to welcome Walker Farrell as our guest on November 9th/6pm. Please join us that day in our beloved and newly arranged showroom!
Walker Farrell from Make Noise is coming to talk to us about the history and future of Make Noise and his own thoughts about modular synths and his music. We will also discuss the philosophy that guides Make Noise when planning instruments and iconic modules like Maths, Erbe-Verb or Morphagene.
Make Noise is one of the key companies of the recent modular renaissance and they keep on developing new and visionary ideas and pushing boundaries.
Dorit Chrysler will give a 1 hour theremin workshop using 10 Moog thereminis at We Make Waves Festival. We Make Waves is a new festival and conference for women, trans and non-binary individuals in the music industry, with its first edition taking place in Berlin from 9-11 November 2017. The aim is to connect existing networks and communities in Berlin and beyond — our doors are open to people of all race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, income, educational background or physical ability. Dorit Chrysler has been dubbed a superior wizard of the theremin. An Austrian-born, New York based composer, producer and singer, Chrysler is the co-founder of the NY Theremin Society and founder of the first school for theremin, Kid Cool Theremin School. As much as the theremin is a tool in Chrysler’s electronic instrument arsenal, she’s also one of the most visible thereminists spreading the gospel of the mysterious sounding instrument which is basically played by massaging air.

GammonsMODULAR SYNTHESIZER ENSEMBLE is on tour during November 2017. The concept for these workshops is to create a Modular Synthesizer Ensemble with the participants and to be able to play an improvised concert in the end. The Modular Synthesizer Ensemple is supported by SchneidersLaden and very pleased to see Gammon spreading knowledge about modular synthesizers and encouraging people to play with instruments they may not have even heard of before.
The workshops start with the very basic terms and guides the participants all the way to be able to play freely and improvised on modular synthesizers. The participants work independently, max. in groups of 2, on the Modular Synthesizer. They are thus directly involved in the process of creating the sounds and are responsible for their individual sound design.
Fundamental knowledge about electronic sound generation is imparted in the “hands-on” process. Ten modular synthesizer systems are designed in such a way that the different configurations create an ensemble with different musical voices. The resulting sounds are the basis for a joint composition, which is recorded with a graphic notation and then played live.
Working with an analog modular synthesizer not only conveys the emergence of electronic music, but is also an important basis for digital electronic music on the computer.
The musician and sound artist Gammon has been active for many years in the field of music and art mediation with various workshop formats. In 2013 he was awarded the international music mediation prize “Junge Ohren” and won the German competition “Kinder zum Olymp”. For more than a decade, he worked successfully with the Thilges3 collective on an international level. The trio used almost exclusively Doepfer‘s Modular Synthesizer for their installative performance formats.
Two weeks ago No Bounds Festival took place in Sheffield and offered a three-day programme of art, music, discussion and workshops united by an experimental nature. The festival did not spare on artistic diversity and locations and was well received by the audience. It involved the Hope Works club, that can be considered as one of the best clubs in the country. No Bounds took place all across the city and gave a stage to artists from all over the world, covering several musical genres ranging from dark techno and electro to cutting-edge experimental music.
From our point of view, Saturday was particularly interesting. At 4pm Jessica Kert from SchneidersLaden and Konstantin Gervis (TipTop Audio) gave a workshop on modular synthesizers.
The workshop was very well attended – most of the participants stayed for 2.30 hrs and listened attentively to Jessicas and Konstantins presentation. The audience was very mixed and excitingly included musicians who had played at the festival and even long time customers of SchneiderLaden. Everyone was extremely hungry for knowledge, incredibly interested and extremely gracious. This also applies to the organizers, who presented themselves very professionally. Thanks you for organizing No Bounds and including the modular synth workshop!
Here are some visual impressions. Thank you to No Bounds festival for the pictures!
