Workshop with Instruō! Thursday 4th of April – 7:30pm

Join us for a special workshop with Jason Lim from Instruō !

Instruō is a manufacturer of innovative euroack modular designs with a unique appearance. The most special module in the portfolio of Instruō might be the Scíon – it is composed of a biofeedback sensor and a quad random CV generator. The module can be used to transform data obtained from plants and other organisms into music. In short: You can finally jam with your favorite cactus! For more predictable compositions there is the very capable Harmonàig quantizer. And if you are into complex VCOs, Instruō provides you with an extra complex complex VCO named Cš-L.

But this will not be a product show, we’ll here some live music with these fine modules talk about the philosophy of Instruō and you’ll get the chance ask all the questions you ever had about Jasons modules.

See you on Thursday 4th of April – 7:30pm at SchneidersLaden! And if you are only about to start your modular journey, join us for the Modular Beginner Workshop at 6pm.

THURSDAY: JOMOX Workshop with Jürgen Michaelis – at SchneidersLaden

Without Jürgen Michaelis the history of electronic music in Berlin might be a bit different. More than twenty years ago the techno community in Berlin was searching for the perfect kick drum sound (and still is?!). TR 909s were rare and that’s where Jürgen comes into play – he knew how to build a proper analog kick drum and so he did – and with some additions like a sequencer and more instruments, the legendary Jomox Xbase 09 was born!

Right from the beginning the sound of Jomox drum machines was so convincing, that artists like Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Martin Gore, The Prodigy and many many more have been using Jomox machines.

But this workshop will not only be about kick drums – we are looking further into the history of Jomox, where the Resonator Neuronium was an important cornerstone. This was the first realization of a device with Resonant Neuron Synthesis. The new paradigms that formed this machine are named complexity, order from chaos, self organization of complex systems, networking and cooperation. From a certain complexity onwards a system is not only the sum total of its parts but a greater whole which gains totally new attributes than its sub structures.

The world of thoughts, that’s what we think – is the world, because actually everything, our entire perception, the world we believe in the 1400cm^3 brain to see and the processing of the senses goes along with a thought. Even a feeling is born from a thought. The old saying of Descartes – I think, therefore I am – is taken to extremes once again in the context of neuronal sensory research. The mantra of cognitive research: consciousness comes from the brain and is the product of thought processes.

So is the world really just a thought? Quite clearly: No.
But it is fun to listen to the resonance processes of the neurons and experience the power of the cosmic basic forces of resonance and networking directly.

Resonator Neuronium, T-Resonator, Alpha Base

THURSDAY: Haken Audio & La Voix du Luthier – Onde // Workshop at SchneidersLaden

Learn about the history and development of one of the most expressive and versatile electronic music instruments around! The Haken Continuum Fingerboard has been around for several years and is still being developed further and further. The heart of this unique instrument is a digital EaganMatrix – based on the principles of the patch-matrix of synthesizers like Arp 2500 and EMS Synthi 100. And it gets its expressiveness from the incomparable surface that acts as the user interface and offers realtime continuous control in three dimensions for every finger that is placed on the playing surface! As well as presenting the Continuum there will be a very rare chance to hear the La Voix du Luthier Onde! With this exceptional approach to the construction of a speaker, the sound directly comes from the vibrations of the 2 soundboards. There is no traditional speaker cone inside, only acoustic exciters transmitting the vibration into the wood. It is the same principle as for a guitar: the strings themselves make very little sound, but they are transmitting their vibrations to the soundboard through the bridge, and what you hear is the sonic amplification via the soundboard. In case of the Onde the exciter is acting as the bridge and transmits the electric “vibrations” to the wood. The Onde gives you a very dispersive and immersive sound and the chance to experience electronic sound sources in a totally new way. This incredible sound can hardly be recorded – so make sure to come to the workshop to get an accurate impression of the Onde!

No registration needed, the event is free.

Workshop and Performance: Blush Response // February 21st // 7:30pm

For the second workshop in our first workshop series in 2019 we invited an artist who is known for his uncompromising, hard sound. Blush Response is Joey Blush, Berlin Based Cuban-American artist and sound designer, who’s music is characterized by a modular synth heavy approach to sound design, combining rough, glitch-heavy beats with thick, distorted synths to create a sound that blurs the lines between Industrial, EBM and Techno. Yummie.

Blush cut his teeth doing programming work for artists such as Fear Factory, Rhys Fulber, Cristian Castro, and as a touring member of Joey Jordison (Slipknot)’s alternative rock project Scar the Martyr. Check out his music here:

In this workshop we’ll not only hear some sounds from his machines – Blush Response will also tell us about his approach to a live-set with modulars and his work in general.

We hope to see you at the workshop – come and learn from someone who knows his craft!

Workshop: Looking at Raster.Labor with Frank Bretschneider

Raster.Labor is an installation project by Raster.Media. Premiered at the CTM Festival a couple of weeks ago we took the chance to bring this great project to SchneidersLaden and explore the ideas behind it with one of the creators – Frank Bretschneider. During the planning stages of the installations Frank discussed some different approaches for the central machine of all five installations with us. The beating heart on all five tables was a modular synthesizer, providing control voltages for other modules and other things producing sound and forming the individual parts of each installation.

Raster.Labor explores “artistic processes, and how they diverge and develop from the same starting point or set of conditions. Five tables with minimal Eurorack setups and a handful of studio monitors form the basis of the piece. The analogue hardware generates and manipulates control voltages, forming a framework in which the artists can complete, connect, and interact with the modules. As the setup does not contain any sound producing components, participating artists will select sound sources themselves, which could range from minuscule to gargantuan sonic objects. They may choose to mechanically generate sound, or to integrate microphones and amplify sound.

Generative composition, whether through regulating sonic events or strategic compositional decisions, has been a key part of electronic music’s history. Labor references both academic and DIY histories of analogue synthesis, exploring open and dynamic fields of hardware experimentation. The intention of the setup is to enable interested audience members to directly observe cause and effect, so digital software will be avoided.

Raster.Labor with Frank Bretschneider, Byetone + Mieko Suzuki, Grischa Lichtenberger, Robert Lippok, Dasha Rush was on display at nGbK, Oranienstr. 25, 10999 berlin from jan 25 until feb 03. 2019.

Join us on Thursday 14. February for this special lecture and workshop with Frank Bretschneider – start at 7:30 pm!

Modular Synthesizer Ensemble workshop with Gammon at Ernst Krenek Forum

In January 2019 the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble will again be a guest at the Ernst Krenek Forum. Due to the great demand last year, there will be 5 workshops this time.
3 of them with school classes from Krems, 2 workshops will be offered for registration.

The Modular Synthesizer makes analog synthesis tangible and easy to understand. It opens up a wide range of sound possibilities and an intuitive and creative approach to electronic music.
The Modular Synthesizer Ensemble consists of a fixed set of twelve Modular Synthesizers. Led by Gammon, a musician and music mediator who has been working with synthesizers since the 1990s, the one-day workshop gives participants a deep insight into the work with modular synthesizers: they experiment, improvise and develop sounds, noises and sequences for their own compositions.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN UNTIL JANUARY 9th! more info here.

Upcoming events at SchneidersLaden – with Lady Starlight, Dieter Doepfer, Vermona, Endorphin.es and Sacha Ketterlin

The regular events on Thursday evening at SchneidersLaden have developed into a permanent institution among interested sound researchers. Not only Berliners like to come frequently, SchneidersLaden welcomes guests from all over the world to every event. With a varied programme and exciting guests, you can experience over and over again how direct the contact to manufacturers and artists is during the events and how much you can learn from them. Be it a Surgeon who talks about his experiences (and with his immense experience) about his entry into eurorack-land and about how he does what and what works at live performances – or Wowa Cwejman giving insights into the development of his sublime modules and who is open for suggestions for improvements coming from the audience during the talk (who would have thought it possible that there was anything to improve in the first place).
But other events were also very well received – there was the Theremin Workshop by Carolina Eyck, one of the most renowned players worldwide – who finally showed a way to master the theremin. Or the audiovisual laser-performance of Bernhard Rasinger, who impressively demonstrated that a laser can trigger a very special fascination, with its direct and immediate intensity. To name just a few of the workshops at SchneidersLaden.

What’s next?

In November SchneidersLaden will continue with the last Workshopseries for this year – and we will start with a real highlight! A few days after her live performance at Berghain, Lady Starlight will open the next workshop series at SchneidersLaden. As a long-time friend and customer, Lady Starlight was already invited by SchneidersLaden to play at Berlin Atonal, at the Modular Schaltzentrale, this year. Together with Mark Verbos she presented 3 hours of uncompromising and improvised modular techno. So expect some raw, straightforward music made with machines on November 8th – starting at 7:30pm (as always) right after the regular Beginner Workshop.

The following Thursday (November 15th) it will be a bit more technical again. Tom Körting shows what can be done with the modules from Vermona. As a developer and manufacturer of synthesizers and effects units Vermona has shown for years already that they can offer uncompromisingly high quality, innovative concepts in their developments again and again. The new fourMative Contour, an ultra-flexible envelope modulation generator, has just come out. But also classics like the fourMulator still manage to tickle creative impulses. Tobi Neumenann also reported on this at his workshop in SchneidersLaden.

On November 22nd, Sacha Ketterlin from the Higher Resonance label will show what it can be like to massage your brain with a modular synthesizer consisting mainly of Macbeth Series X modules (see picture) – an atmospheric and intense ambient performance is to be expected. The following weeks event (November 29th) is dedicated to Endorphin.es – the company, not that stuff in your brain that makes you happy but the modules between your fingers that make you happy. The manufacturer of eurorack modules (with perhaps the most unusual panel designs) presents a live performance by Nicolas Bougaïeff with devices from Endorphin.es. After the performance Nicolas will be there to answer your questions. And to finish this extraordinary year of modular madness we welcome the person who started it all – Dieter Doepfer will be our guest on Saint Nicholas Day – December 6th!

So mark your calendars for the events you think are the most interesting – or just come by every Thursday have a beer with us and learn something about our most favorite machine – the synthesizer.

And if you are only about to start your modular journey or just want to know what the hell I am talking about -> join our Modular Synthesizer Beginner Workshops! -> Every Thursday 6pm at SchneidersLaden!

November – December:

  • 08.11 – Lady Starlight
  • 15.11 – Vermona
  • 22.11 – Sacha Ketterlin
  • 29.11 – Endorphin.es
  • 06.12 – Dieter Doepfer

Sacha Ketterlin performing live at SchneidersLaden

On November 22nd, Sacha Ketterlin from the Higher Resonance label will show what it can be like to massage your brain with a modular synthesizer consisting mainly of Macbeth Series X modules (see picture below) – an atmospheric and intense ambient performance is to be expected.

MaxPowerPHOTO_SACHA_KETTERLIN_System_s

Sacha Ketterlin has been building his instrument for many years. His focus is on the careful compilation of modules for the perfect analog sound and to make as few trade-offs as possible in order to bring it to the stage. Especially during his ambient performances you can really feel the quality of the sounds, here no sacrifices are made. Chords don’t come from samplers or digital modules, but from precisely tuned Macbeth oscillators – you can hear the difference.

XAOC Devices Workshop //October 18th @SchneidersLaden

On October 18th Schneidersladen welcomes XAOC Devices from Poland as our guests. They will be showing some of their latest developments and explain the highly complex and powerful Zadar – an ultra flexible envelope generator and so much more. It is equipped with an OLED screen and almost endless options to create up to four extremely precise and complex envelopes. Or take a look at the “Binary Conversion Komputor” called Drezno. This unique module consists of AD/DA converters that let you extract gates from audio signals and audio signals from gates – which is only a very condensed description of what this module is capable of. XAOC Devices often brings something new to the table and the Drezno is no exception, it even features an expander called Lipsk. The expander lets you invert single bits in the stream of data produced by Drezno.

Also: Odessa! The new additive oscillator is not even available yet – in this workshop you’ll get the chance to learn more about it! Odessa brings a lot of tonal variety to the table, it might be the most elaborate implementation of additive synthesis in eurorack right now.

As you can see XAOC Devices really goes one step further with their modules and you get the chance to talk to the makers themselves and to see the modules in action in a small performance part of the workshop. Don’t miss the chance to take part in the upcoming workshop with one of the most innovative eurorack manufacturers these days.

TouellSkouarn concert and workshop // October 4th @SchneidersLaden

On the 4th of October (7:30pm) we have TouellSkouarn as our guest. The company that develops and manufactures eurorack modules was founded in 2010 by Gaël Loison, musician (Dale Cooper Quartet, Noroeste, Maman Küsters…) and graphic designer (Ultra Rapide Canari). He dedicated his brand to the design, manufacturing and sale of analog electronic musical instruments. The brand has distinguished itself internationally by its special design, its sound, the use of Breton language and creamy distortions. The very good reputation of TouellSkouarn was enhanced by the use of TouellSkouarn products by great musicians (Depeche Mode, Yann Tiersen, Gareth Jones, Blawan, Celldweller…). For the event at SchneidersLaden Gaël will play a concert with his modular synthesizer and an Octatrack, before giving us an insight into his company and the ideas behind his modules.

Have a beer with us afterwards or visit the Modular Beginner Workshop at 6pm and join both events on Thursday! See you at SchneidersLaden!

Theremin Workshop with Carolina Eyck @SchneidersLaden

Theremin Workshop at SchneidersLaden with Carolina Eyck – one of the most prominent theremin players worldwide! She developed a special playing technique that leads to extraordinary results. In 2006, Carolina published the first extensive theremin method book entitled “The Art of Playing the Theremin”, available in german and english. The 8-finger-technique described in this book can be learned or witnessed in lectures, workshops, concerts and performances by Carolina Eyck all over Europe. In September you have the chance to be part of a special Theremin Workshop at SchneidersLaden by Carolina Eyck: September 6th at 7:30pm.

Carolina will bring her very rare Pro version of the Moog Etherwave Theremin. This model has been discontinued several years ago. It is considered to be the most professional and serious Theremin model Moog ever made. Due to the better scaling of the pitch field it is more suitable for professional Theremin playing. The standard Moog Etherwave Theremins do not feature this better scaled pitch field. But there is a way to improve the playability of the standard Moog Theremin (Plus) by adding a modification that has been developed by Thierry Frenkel. This modification is available from a shop in The Hague. There will be a Moog Etherwave Plus with this modification to try out at the workshop!

If you have been to SUPERBOOTH18 you might have seen Carolina playing a concert on the Seaside-Stage! The video of this concert can soon be found on HerrSchneiders Vimeo channel. In the meantime there is this short conversation between HerrSchneider and Carolina Eyck before SUPERBOOTH18.

Summary: Theremin Workshop with Carolina Eyck – September 6th, 7:30pm @SchneidersLaden

SchneidersLaden and Gammon @Elektronauten Festival Hamburg

For three days, the Elektronauten Festival in the Elbphilharmonie is all about electronically produced music – synthesizers, vocoders, loop music, oscillators and much more. There are concerts, talks and lots of workshops to participate. SchneidersLaden will be there too!

The hands-on lecture by Berlin sound artist Thomas Kircher is just the right thing for those who are still unfamiliar with these terms. Thomas Kircher is a student of “Sound Studies and Sonic Arts” and works in the legendary Berlin synthesizer shop SchneidersLaden. In five 90-minute lectures he explains the basics of synthesizer music, uncomplicated and without becoming too technical. In his lecture he illustrates how to program, control, modulate, route and mix voltages with patch cables – in short, how a sound is created on a synthesizer. He also takes a look at the history of electronic music, the philosophy of the developers of then and now and reports first-hand on the dynamics and development of the scene in recent years.

The Modular Synthesizer Ensemble by Gammon will also be present at Elektronauten Festival. The Modular Synthesizer Ensemble provides 12 synthesizers to create sounds, melodies and noises and write whole compositions. Guided by Gammon, a musician and music mediator who has been working with synthesizers since the 1990s, the participants in this one-day workshop gain a deep insight into working with modular synthesizers – experimenting, improvising and developing their own composition.

Here is a video of Gammons project at SUPERBOOTH18 where the participants were school children.

You will also be able to find the Modular Carousel there and learn how to patch a modular synthesizer – the avant-garde instrument in electronic music production.

Find out more on the official Elektronauten Festival Homepage.

Distortion with Animal Factory Amplification – Workshop Video @SchneidersLaden

Animal Factory Amplification is an innovative Indian guitar pedal manufacturer that is even adapting its circuits for eurorack modular! Not many manufacturers in the music tech industry come from India and if you listen to the fascinating story of AFA (Animal Factory Amplification) you get an idea why. Aditya – founder, developer and engineer of AFA gave an insight into his story, from being a teenager in India building distortion pedals from the rare electronic parts he could get his hands on – to these present days where he shares a stage at SUPERBOOTH18 together with Alexander Hacke from Einstürzende Neubauten to present his products -watch the video from Superbooth here!

This workshop at SchneidersLaden gives a very detailed overview about different distortion techniques and the differences these make sound-wise. Learn not only about the impressive circuits Aditya developed, but also about the ideas and history behind these and get some tips and tricks for the use of these machines and how to get the best results.

The best of the whole story is that Aditya bringing his circuits to the eurorack format. The Baron Samedi and Pit Viper are already available! With CV control these modules bring another creative dimension to the table.

Verbos Electronics – Multi-Delay Processor -> Workshop Video!

Here is the first workshop video from our new room at SchneidersLaden – Schneiders VideoTheke. Please enjoy the video of Mark Verbos presenting his latest development and watch out for more events in this new room. We will announce these here on stromkult.com!

This workshop is about the very first product by Verbos Electronics designed and manufactured in Berlin. All previous modules focused on old circuits and all analog designs – so this is also the first Verbos module that includes digital technology at its heart. There are eight digital delays clocked by an analog VCO with voltage control. But instead of reading my bad explanation of what this module is capable of and how it works, please watch the video and Marks excellent presentation of his latest module.

THIS THURSDAY! Video Synthesis Workshop and Modular Beginner Workshop @Schneidersladen:

Verbos Electronics – Multi-Delay Processor // Special Workshop // April 19th @SchneidersLaden

On Thursday 19th of April at 6pm we will start an evening full of new experiences!

We start at 6pm with an introduction to modular synthesis that is suitable for beginners and for all those who are curious about synthesis.

At 7pm Mark Verbos will introduce you to his latest module – the Multi-Delay Processor. The Multi-Delay Processor is a bank of 8 digital delays chained in series, and voltage controllable. There are 3 signal inputs. When using only the first, reverberated and octave up pitch shifted feedback are normalled into the others. This allows reverb effects, shimmer, rising echos and fantasy ambiences. This and all the other capabilities of this complex module will be explained by the creator himself.

This workshop will be the first to happen in our new event room! And to make this an even more perfect evening, Mark Verbos will play an ambient performance at the end of the workshop!

Do not miss this special evening at Schneidersladen!

To get the chance to hear the (by now) unreleased Multi-Delay Processor in person and enjoy this special workshop with us, please send an e-Mail to Timm to register for this workshop. Since we have limited space, we have to limit this event to 25 people.

Video: WhoMadeWho interview with DIFFUS Magazin at Schneidersladen

In December we had very special guests at Schneidersladen, WhoMadeWho and DIFFUS Magazin. They recorded an interview about their new album that will be released on 19th of January. Jeppe, Tomas and Tomas took the chance and turned the showroom into a stage and the interview turned into an improvised jam session for some time. It was a very welcome visit and we want to thank everyone involved.
