Kick it like… 11 Bass Drums for eurorack

Here it is: The big bass drum module comparison – this one goes to eleven. In just under 20 minutes we play 11 bass drum modules, all with the same sequence, no frills. This is just about listening to all modules in the same setup to be able to compare them. Just what people do when they come to SchneidersLaden showroom to compare modules.

Deciding on a new module is often a lengthy process of weighing pros and cons, gathering opinions, and watching videos. There are product descriptions and feature lists, but ultimately it comes down to sound – does the sound of the module fit the aesthetic I want?

We put all the bass drum modules from our showroom into a rack – 102hp – to pit them against each other: Tiptop Audio – BD909 & BD808, Hexinverter – Mutant BD09 & Mutant Bassdrum, WMD – Crater, Noise Engineering – Basimilus Iteritas Alter, Erica Synths – Bass Drum, Jomox – ModBase 09 Mk II, 2hp – Kick, L.E.P. – Cassa, Befaco – Kickall.

They all have their own character, very different concepts and features. We are not interested in whether one module has three CV inputs more than another, but only in the basic sound – some of the presented modules are quite capable to function as a stand-alone synthesizer voice, but that’s not what we want to talk about here.

We hope the video can help you in your search for your next kick. At the beginning of the video there is a timeline to help you find your favorites.

NAMM 2018 – Noise Engineering

Around the corner as always the nice people from Noise Engineering coming up with five new eurorack modules this spring . This time it got more busy in the tool corner and they have a bunch of little helping friends with them:

Bin Seq a 4 HP switchable gate sequencer. Clep Diaz a Complex/multimode CV generator. Use Clep Diaz to generate stepped, random, or LFO CVs where you have control over directionality of the CV (up, up/down, or down) and over the nature of the CV signal: In Step & Rand mode, choose the number of steps in the cycle. In LFO mode, control the amplitude of the LFO. Also in 4Hp.

Mimetic Digitalis is a 10 HP 16-step two-dimensional CV sequencer optimized for live use.  At its simplest, MD is a simple two-dimensional 16-step sequencer with 4 CV outs and a trigger out. Pause the clock to individually program each step…or.. use the encoder to live edit patterns or zero any step or combination of patterns with the Zero button or create a randomized, rhythmic CV with the Shred button or Edit to your heart’s content, and return to your initial pattern (choruslike!) with the touch of a button. – And of course lots of cv control on board .

Muta Jovis is a 4 HP switchable quad mute. Soleo Vero is a little tuner in 4 HP. A patch-through stroboscope tuner which tunes up to three oscillators without having to patch/unpatch and thru the stroboscope it its possible to tune without audio on.

Some of their eurorack moduless will be although in 5U format available that will be the three of oscillators: Basimilus Iteritas MagnusCursus Iteritas Magnus, and Manis Iteritas Magnus in 5U. Look for those for simultaneous release in the next few months.

Some of the new modules can be found in this video by sonicstate:

about NEW products… Livestock Electronics, XOR Electronics, Noise Engineering

We have some new modules in our assortment that we want to introduce to you: Modules by Livestock Electronics, XOR Electronics and a very special module by Noise Engineering.

Livestock Electronics has three new modules to offer. A wavetable oscillator, a mixer and signal distributor. We will now take a closer look at what makes these modules special and sets them apart from others.

Bang: What sets Bang apart from other digital VCO’s is its capability to produce sound that is based on wavetables drawn by the user. Users can load self-made waveforms into the module via a microSD card slot. For generating waves, Livestock Electronics developed a Windows and a OSX application. Bang comes equipped with tuning and wave shaping options as well as a FM input plus bipolar attenuator.

Felix: Felix is a buffered signal distributor and/or multiple, which can be used in 1:6 or 2:3 configurations. It is either a flexible multiple and/or emitting CV signals in the range of either 0V to +5V or -5V to +5V.

MIR: MIR is a mixer, but at the same time a lot more than that. It can also be used as an inverter, VCA and distortion. It comes equipped with four channels, each featuring two signal inputs, a summing stage plus a VCA with switchable characteristics. With high signal levels you can achieve some serious distortion.

XOR Electronics has got a new sequencer to offer – the NerdSeq. It follows a concept that has already been used in very early digital music sequencer software. This software ran on hardware like the Fairlight CMI, Amiga and C64, newer adaptions would be the Renoise or Jeskola Buzz. Now XOR has adapted the Tracker concept for eurorack, with 8 tracks, a nice display and all necessary buttons to navigate through the software. And the best thing – with the expander it is not only possible to add MIDI in- and outputs to the NerdSeq, but also to connect a Sega Gamepad!

Noise Engineering brings the Loquelic Iteritas to a different evolutionary level: Loquelic Iteritas Percido. This new module is a futuristic synthesizer voice for creating massive, mechanically sounding basses, special effects and ultra-modern drums. Basically it is a digital oscillator, a flexible shapeable AD envelope with trigger and loop modes, which can influence pitch and any number of synthesis parameters simultaneously. The LIP is one of these sound generators that can be used by only using a trigger, but it benefits from its modulation inputs and can sound like a whole futuristic orchestra when patched right.
